Like the title says, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Austin, TX emissions inspections and can offer me a little help getting a sticker for my car. I haven't had to inspect in Austin yet since moving here, but I understand they use an in the tailpipe method only (i.e. no rollers, just a high idle test). I know the lack of an EGR will raise NOX on the roller test, but I'm wondering if it will do the same for a high idle test? I do have a high flow cat installed.

I'm not trying to to refire the EGR/non-EGR debate I remember from a year ago or so, just seeing if anyone has any insight into getting a car to pass in TRavis county without an EGR.

If anyone has any connections with a shop where I could test run it before the real thing so I don't log a fail in the system I would really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for any help. I've been away from these forums for the past year (and away from my beautiful car, which hasn't been driven much in the last year either and now not at all due to the inspection issue, which I now want to correct and get her back on the road!)

Well, if you have adjustable cam gears, you can dial in a little more valve over lap.
That will put a little more exhaust into the mix.
Then after you pass, put the cam settings back to where they were.

if this is the first time in texas, you can get it inspected at any shop (meaning out of county that doesnt do tail pipe sniffers). If not, i had to register mine out of county at a friends house to avoid this exact issue.

other wise id think e85 and maybe a stock cat with good stoich af ratios could get it by... iirc a nother guy in austin has a 2jzge-t swap and running e85 is what got him through.

E85 huh? Never thought of that. Guess it doesn't hurt things to run just a little of it when the engine isn't designed for it? I'll have to look into this a bit more. And yes I have to do it in Travis county cause the car registration has already been moved here as they update all your cars when you update one as they say you have to register all cars in your county of residence. I was thinking of having my father try and register it in San Antonio but I'm not sure how to do that without signing the title over to him. If any of you guys have gone that route (having your daily driver in your residence county then registering your supra out f county at a different address I would love to know

Thanks!

Oh and for all the mods to the car, no adjustable cams. Maybe if that is what I have to do for emissions I might finally do it.

1. as mentioned above....find somewhere you can register it out of smog-check counties

.....OR.....

2. I've heard you can "buy" a sticker...but that might be illegal :)

Did you say they just do a high idle test? Normally when the car isn't loaded you will have very little to no Nox output, just some food for thought for you.

That was my thought too which is why I was hoping someone without egr that had passed the Austin test could let me know.

i live in houston and drove my supra for two years without going IN for inspection. you have to try to FIND a sticker. or put the egr back on.
