Just looking for reliability issues, cost of parts, how often you need to change things, etc. Just lemme know! any + or - you can think of for the 1.8/awd/5 speed would help too. How tough are the trannies? Im thinking of getting an 02-04 a4 1.8t. Or, any alternative new-ish awd/turbos in the 10k-18k range? The wrx WAS on the list too but after reading the thread a few down from here it kinda scared me away. And the mazdaspeed 6, but they are a bit too new and expensive still. preferrably something 4 door with a nice interior too! The legacy gt would also do if i could find one in my price range without a ton of miles

My friend has a 2000 GTI 1.8T and the parts aren't too bad on pricing from basic tune up things he's gotten, more than Toyota parts but its nice because there's a lot of compatible parts from Audi/VW 1.8T's. Hope this helps somewhat.

thats good to know. anybody know how tough they are? I do plan to abuse it somewhat. And i will be willing to pay for things i break. Just looking for a headsup! I want to get it to at least 200whp too, but not much more than that. A turbo back exhaust and chip will get me that. Also how do they do on gas? epa ratings tend to be way off for turbo and awd cars in general

My friend has a 1.8t Golf with a chip and exhaust and it's a fun car. She doesn't beat on it a ton, but she does drag race, and auto x it and I think the only thing she ever had problems with was after she chip'd it she had some issues with it running like shit, but that was fixed after she changed the plugs in it.

the factory water pumps suck.. the impeller is plastic and breaks...
keep a good timing belt on it and replace tensioner and if it has the hydrolic tensioner its a must to replace that to...
They are very tough reliable engines... Maf goes bad alot.. temp sending units.. and the cat's fall apart inside and rattle..Motor mounts are week.. on some models..
The water outlet on back of head tends to crack and leak alot.. and the A/c compressors are junk on vws.. they tend to go alot...

All the parts are relitivly cheap and very easy car to work on...

Transmissions are not real tough.. speed shift a few to many times and you will have a grinding transmission...If you know how to drive one.. they will last ... you just cant bang the gears on these..

front lower rear control arm bushings are another week point..they tend to need replaced atleast once in the cars life...

My self the GTI VR6 rocks.. lot harder to work on.. but one hella motor...

thats just my opinun...

sounds like my porsche!!! lots of little stuff to piss you off. But, im sure the parts are cheaper, being that it is much newer (i have an 87 924s). I dont plan on tearing up the transmission like i did in my supra but i do want to have some fun with it. Take it to the track a few times, a few street races, awd launches, etc. How much can they take power wise if you are nice to them?
