Anyone ever dissassembled the oil pump?

So I was just curious if anyone has ever tried to completely disassemble the 7mgte factory oil pump and clean it/make sure its working fine and reassamble it? If so, what were the results?

I have time to waste in the shop while I'm waiting for my block to be machined and figured I have nothing to lose by tearing the oil pump apart and cleaning it since I was going to get a new one anyway because of the metal shavings from a bearing in the pan.

Also while on this note I have read a lot of contradicting views to shim the pump or not. Can someone tell me the bottom line on this subject?

Thanks

Ive never heard anyone say to NOT shim the pump, but i think i can be overshimmed.
Ive also never heard of anyone completely tearing apart the pump, just taking the top cover
Off and checking clearances as per the tsrm...and also a few guys have had their two gears moly coated
To increase oil shedding and tighten clearances. I think one of those that did this was either Iboughtasupra, or Supracentral.

I suppose that holds true for me as well, since I'm not re-using the oil pump that was in my 7M-GTE. (Particularly not since I saw what was left of the bearings when I pulled the crank!) I guess that I've got nothing to lose in this process as well.

Worst case, I ruin an oil pump that was serviceable, but not trusted.

Medium case, I gain some experience which will be useful when I pull the engine currently in the car.

Best case, I have a trustworthy oil pump for use in the engine which is currently in the car, and learn enough to rebuild that oil pump to make it useful to someone else.

I just took it apart ( the way the tsrm shows IS pretty much completely taking it apart) and there were a few tiny pieces of metal in there. Actually they all seemed to get stuck on the opposite side of the filter/screen thing(is that magnetic, cuz if it is that was a good idea). Clearances seemed pretty good...I didn't know how the hell to measure backlash but I think I figured it out...all in all I think I have a pretty good pump still but probably not the best place to skimp out I will just order a new one (and check it too).

Now I have an extra just in case...and learned a little too. I'd recommend doing it if you have the time I mean it is the heart of the car and all....thanks guys.

5mm max on the shims, any more and you risk coil binding and runaway pressure at high rpm, Most of the brand new pumps I've bought were built to the loose side of the specs and are most likely responsible for the low hot idle pressures people complain of and the total and utter BULLSHIT that the 7M system is high flow low pressue by design... :nono:

I bought a "new" oil pump from Toyota a couple years ago and pulled it apart to shim the relief valve, and for some reason decided to measure the clearances. Both the gear backlash and side clearances were at max spec per TSRM. Now I always double check clearances on everything.

I have also gone higher than 5mm on the shims. Pretty awsome how an oil filter will spit the seal out along with most of your oil.....

LMAO went though that with a BBC+15Qt's of oil when it burst the filter case, been using Moroso Thick Case filters ever since!
