I'm more of a quarter mile guy than a road course guy. I know that to make big power the tranny has to be upgraded, but I was wondering what kinds of times, mods, or difficulties come with a 1jz or 2jz auto. So, is anybody out there?

Go for it.. auto is sick for drag..

Even a toyo trans with a 3800 stall and a nice sized single is a rocket ship.. very streetable still from what I hear..

Just check SF.. Hotsoup I think went 11.50s on stock Trans and stock stall with the stock twins.. Like 11.20s with a stall and the stock trans (MKIV TT trans, but very similar to the aristo TT trans.. just the output shaft is different from what I understand).

"au_traumatic" is FTL and no fun ... if you think it would make you go fast on the strip then go for it. My daily driver is auto and I hated driving it. :)

It seems that everyone has differing opinions. Would anyone with experience care to explain why this is a bad idea, or why you would lose driveability? I think that drag strip capability has been proven, but if you can no longer "drive the car" or is you "lose drive-ability" I need to know why.

I did an auto 1J swap and love it, turbo auto cars are the shit...I've shimmed the accumulators, but I didn't do it enough. I need to pull the tranny back out to replace the rear main seal anyway, so in the process, I'm either going to have it built then, or just add a stall and put in either 8.5mm or 9mm shims. It just doesn't have the punch I'm wanting right now.

I've owned at one point two auto 1JZGTE SC300s. Now just back to one, listed in the sig.

Auto FTW. I hear 8mm shims is the sweet spot. I guess maybe more is needed?

I don't like the 1JZGTE with a 5spd, you can tell the difference in the torque. My stock twin auto put down 340lb torque. Most 5spds only do like 280lb.

I don't remember what size my shims are now, stupid me didn't measure them originally. But, I read that the Aussie Lexus guys said 8mm is what most people run, if you want to go a little more aggresive, stepping up to 8.5 or 9 is do-able, but it's going to be kinda harsh. I had a built auto in my Buick when I had it, and I loved the way it shifted, wasn't too hard, but reminded you that it was built. And with the little bitty stall it had, just rolling into boost off a light never would light the tires up, just squat and go. I miss that car.

Far as I know you can run a 2JZ converter in a 1JZ auto tranny, and there are boatloads of stalls available for them. I'm planning on doing a 3500 maybe 3800, still unsure.

Shimming the accumulators helps to speed up/make more firm the shifts, you have to pull the valve body off, but it's fairly straight forward, and pretty easy to do. Some threads for you on the topic....

Yah, an auto 1jz would be a fun car to just relax and drive. And they do make better low end torque, but sacrifice a little in the high end. I still think a 5 spd. is way more fun to drive and more sporty in the canyons which does the trick for me. It would be nice to have both though.:naughty:

Don't tell me your gonna swap an AUTO in that beautiful white car! Is it not fun to have to try at the track? Its takes no skill to stall and steer and auto, but why not learn how to launch and shift at your points and such.

Don't jump to conclusions now. I was curious how the auto experience compared to the 5spd and what it takes to make power on an auto. My 5spd is still chillin in the garage, complete with C's short shifter, and ACT street upgrade clutch, just waiting for the 2j to come home.

I've always been and always will be a automatic transmission guy when I have a turbo car. It started off with Grand Nationals, now the SC.

I HATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the lag associated with a manual transmission and a decent sized turbo. A 5spd tranny can make even a 60-1 feel like a GT47-88. With the auto, my 65mm feels like stock twins.
