Well I've searched and searched and I just wanted to be certain, I have a knock.... it happens at idle and grows with rev's, but its not a consistant knock its very random, almost sounds like popcorn when its about done cooking. I thought when rods knock its a consistant knock not something so random. Thanks

It could be a few things here.

It could be piston slap. It could be the vales in the head.

None of them are good. I am not sure what causes piston slap. I know what it is.

You need to try and pin point the sound and find exactlly where it is coming from.

piston slap occurs when the cylinders and pistons have not warmed up enough to expand and fill the loose fit when cold. thus any sideways forces makes the pistons slap the cylinder walls until they heat up enough to fit snugly. i suppose excessive cylinder/piston wear could attribute to this. this is why you dont rev the motor excessively when its cold. piston slap can break a piston.

have you checked your main crankshaft pulley bolt? i've heard a loose one can cause funny noises...

So this means that if I hear this sound on my car when it starts cold I can assume that its normal? because I just started noticing it this winter, I'm in the Southern Hemisphere =)

When starting it, let it idle and warm up, dont rev it.

Thats standard knowledge :) Piston slap isnt "normal", but it happens. You should be fine if you let it warm up correctly

i JUST read another thread about not letting your car warm up for minutes but driving it instead (but driving it easy). one post even said how the manual even states begin driving about 10 seconds from startup...just enough for oil pressure. according to the thread, letting your car idle to warm up causes the most wear than any other engine action you can do...including WOT...

i cant find the thread though....??

and yes i meant crankshaft pulley bolt, sorry!

It didn't last as long as conventional oil. You know how you can tell a difference in your ride after the oil change? I can tell when my ride is in need of a change. It runs a bit gruff, if you will.

It was just shitty oil. And I'm a castrol guy so I hate to even say it. It just happens to be true.

Just exactly how can you tell the difference?
I know when I need to change the oil by the mileage or date. Every 2500 mi. or 3 months, which ever comes first. Religiously. I use Castrol GTX 10w30. The oil is only a touch darker when I let it out than it was when I put it in. Prevents Rod Knock that way....

What do you mean how can i tell the difference.

It's just like when someone lies to you. You know it.
I said it runs a bit more rough than it does after the change. It runs a bit rough when it's ready to be changed. It runs smooth after.

I use the mileage also. I'm not saying I rely on the powers of the force to let me know when the car is in need.

I use castrol gtx 10w 40. The oil is crystal clear. I have never seen such nice oil from this car.
