My aluminum driveshaft seems to make a hollow clunking noise when engaged or disengaged by the drivetrain (when stepping on the gas and letting off). Is this common? I'm tempted to zip-tie a couple of small pieces of dynamat sound deadening material on it to at least get rid of the hollow ringing sound when it clunks.(keeping balance in mind)

sounds like the bolts that hold it to the diff are loose....ask me how I know LOL

If you can take a pick of the drive shaft I'm sure we could id it...

Exactly what I was thinking. Make sure they are tight. I've had the exact same problem with the same symptoms with my factory driveshaft.

My steel 1pc does that. I don't have any more play in the diff than you'd expect. The long hollow tube doesn't help quiet it either. If everything's tight your only real option is rebuilding the diff and making it nice and tight (especially on the input side).

EDIT: Oh. but mine doesn't "ring" at all.. just a small clunk.

Mine did that because the tranny output bearing was shot and had a lot of play in it.

Climb under there and see what's loose.

Do you know what diff you're using? My Torsens have a slight clunk noticed when engaging. Noticed it while rebuilding as well but seems to be part of the design vs. a cluth type.
