Got my aluminum driveshaft installed. Bought it from Jeff at Jaws Gear...I must say the quality is top notch. Very nice welds, ultra heavy duty U-joints, perfect fitment, weights about 12 lbs...plus it was about $50 cheaper than the competition. Take a look at the pics.

Here was my problem...I knew I had a center bearing going out and the U-joints were worn on the stock driveshaft. When the tranny shifted, there was a "clunk" from both U-joints and at certain speeds, I got a rattling sound from under the console. I replaced my differential with a completely re-built 3.90 ratio with new TRD LSD carrier....everything was replaced except the input/output shafts and ring gear. Within the 1st day, the center bearing noise got worse...there was also a buzzing sound at about 80 mph at a mid throttle setting. The U-jount "clunk" got louder and the shift was kinda jerky.

Considering how much $$$ I just sunk in this differential, I was pissed. I couldn't figure out why changing differentials would cause all these problems. So I decided to go ahead and change out the driveshaft to eliminate that as a problem. I measured the distance from the tip of the tranny output spline (45") to the yoke on the differential per Jeff's instructions and ordered the aluminum single piece shaft from Jaws....got here in a little over a week.

I just took her out for a run...no "clunk", no rattle, normal engine vibration, firm, but smooth shifts. Frigging amazing...I can hardly believe the old driveshaft caused all that crap! Overall a big thumbs up on this driveshaft

On to the install...

Install was straight forward...didn't even have to remove the CAT back. All there is to it is 4 bolts on the differential end, take the cross brace off, and 2 bolts on the center bearing...just slides right out. You can really tell the difference in weight...the stock shaft is damn heavy!

Next you lube the splines on the new shaft and slide it right in...piece of cake. Here's the only problem I had...the stock differential bolts are about 5mm too short for the new shaft yoke. The stockers are 10x1.0mm, 25mm long...the new shaft has a thicker mating surface, so the only way they would fit would be to eliminate the lock washer. I didn't like that idea, so I went out in search of new bolts. The closest I could find was 10x1.25mm, 40 mm long flange bolts in a grade 10. I used a air cut-off tool to shorten to 30mm and had to turn down the flange on the bolt head the fit the recess in the yoke. I used flange nuts and lock washers to complete the install...torque is 54 ft/lbs per the TRSM.

Here's a few pics of the aluminum shaft installed...if you look close, you can see how the bolts are recessed a little.

congrats, what difference in hp is there between stock and aluminum? I was thinking about doin it down the road

Don't have any HP numbers...It did feel more solid on acceleration and the shifts were much nicer. What I was really glad for was the racket the damn stocker was making completely disappeared :biglaugh:

why factory install that 2 piece unit anyway?

Easy- they are quieter... no one wants to buy a car that has drivetrain noise... aight peace :chicken:

ps- I have an aluminum driveshaft also, best $100 I ever spent :)

That's a steel shaft from DSS...they charge $449 for an aluminum one. This is the 1st time I dealt with Jaws...they have a good product and it fit perfect. Worked for me.

Do they have one available for the W58? I'd also like to know how much. Do they have a website someone could direct me to? THX!
