Hey guys

lately my winter beater 87 N/A on start up i notice the break light and red battery lights on also volt meter at 12V

then as soon as i floor it and get the RPM above 4500 it goes away
and the Volt meter jump to 14V as normal

today i floor it as usual and the lights stays on and voltmeter stuck at 12V

im thinking voltage regulator and alternator????????????????/

can i just buy brushes for the alternator and change it??????????????????

parts number????????????????

thanx

Just run the alternator down to your local auto parts store and have them check it. It's easy to get off and then you'll know for sure.

i had that problem, and it was the brushes in the alternator. it took about 15 minutes to replace. :) besides, they're mad cheap, so even if they're not the problem, you only lost a few bucks by trying them. BUT if it is them, then you saved a bundle. :)

^^^ i agree, mine did the same.. but toyota made it very easy to install thier brushes, i was actually disapointed that it was so easy,, kinda made me miss the old days of seperating the alt, NOT

I've run into the same problem and had it be the windings on the alt instead of the brushes. I'd still change the brushes first, just on the general principle that you replace the cheap parts first.
