just how tight should the alternator belt be? i dont have the tension tool to check it, so just going by feel. should it be rock solid, have an inch of play?

It should have a little bit of play, not much. I've never used a tension tool and haven't lost one yet, knock on wood.
Probably best described as less than a quarter inch of play? It's hard to describe what wiggle is ok and what is too much.
