All this work for a targa? (My build and questions thread… and pics)

Well I guess it’s time for me to start my build thread because it won’t be long before I’m in need of major help and one thread to put all of my questions and planning in is probably the way to go. Plus, it’ll be fun to look back as the project progresses and see where I started from and where I end up.

I guess a little history wouldn’t hurt. I bought my first Supra, an 88 Turbo, back in ’98 when I was just a 20 yr old broke college kid. The car didn’t run when I got it – had a bad turbo, bad CPS, blown headgasket, and some creative engineering work under the hood. Well a solid week of working on it along with some healthy credit card debt and I was rolling.

My mods consisted of a manual boost controller, gutted cats, K&N fipk, springs/struts/swaybars/rims. Just enough to make a young guy drive his car so hard that things break. Here’s a pic of the ol’ beast in it’s heyday:

Well in early ’04, after spending a never-ending fortune fixing things that go wrong with a 16+ year old car I got frustrated and, on a whim, parked it in exchange for a GrandAm. Although I felt all grown up with a more adult car it didn’t take long for me to realize how much I missed the Supra and how much I hate American cars - but I put it out of mind and didn’t think about the Supra much for the next 3 years. Then a few months ago I bought Forza 2 for my Xbox and within 3 days of racing my virtual Supra I was negotiating with people on eBay and Craigslist for a targa top shell to rebuild using my ol’ Supra as a parts-car.
Here’s what I found:

An ’87 Turbo that runs and had a brand-new bodykit with it. Again, on impulse (and since it was dirt cheap and only 45 minutes away) I scooped it up without really checking it out – solid body my ass, dude did a good job hiding some of the not-so-solid parts of the body (especially the driver’s side rear wheel well):

Hopefully that’s the worst of it, no worries tho, I’ve got a friend who’s a professional bodyman at the Toyota dealership and will be helping out in exchange for beer.

The future plans for this project, as Yoda would say, are always in motion. We’ll probably start with getting the body-work done, then paint. I plan to gut it completely and take it pretty much down to the shell and cut out any rust so there’s no nasty surprises in the future. I’ll be pulling the springs and struts off the parts-car along with the sway bars, probably the blue interior, the new’ish turbo, the head, who knows what else. I really have no idea where this project is going to take me, I know I don’t like the primer color exterior or the maroon interior so all that will have to go.
Before the engine goes in I plan to have a full 3” exhaust and an intercooler+pipes upgrade, probably a lexus afm and an afpr etc… I’m shooting for late April ’08 for the ‘new’ Supra to be road-worthy, hopefully…

Well here we go, Project Supra, as it’s become known to my family and friends, has begun. I’m all ready to go, manuals for an ’87 and an ’88, pretty redundant but hey, they were free to me:

First step was removing the engine/tranny from the parts car, on the day I decided to do it I didn’t have an engine hoist handy yet but I really wanted to get started so I pulled the head first and the rest later on… That sucked some serious ass, I won’t be doing it that way again:

Then impatience took over, I wanted to start work on the car I’ll actually be driving so now I’ll be pulling a lot of stuff out of the ol’ supra outside instead of the comfy garage. But hey, it’s progress, pulling an engine this way is way easier and way way way quicker:

That’s my dad (northeast US’s “Toyota guy”) looking on, probably thinking “Man, my 30 yr old ‘kid’ makes a lot of work for me, not to mention makes me really nervous! And wtf, I thought we were done with Supras years ago…”

So right now I’m continuing the complete gutting of the car, then we’ll go from there. One very important part of this project is going to be a nice custom interior. I’m kicking around a lot of ideas for color schemes and such right now, so far I’m thinking blue with some other color for accents on the interior and a dark blue pearl of some sort for the exterior. And I’ll definitely be leaving out the rear seats and trying to make whatever goes in their place look factory.

Time for a couple of questions;

With the engine rebuild I’ll be getting the head/block checked and machined and installing a MHG, possibly bigger pistons if the cylinders need work and whatever else needs to be replaced. Besides gaskets and the usual replaceable parts what else should I consider replacing while I have it apart? Is that oil-line in the pan really restrictive enough to spend the $$ on the replacement SS line? How about bearings and such, should they be replaced even if they look good on inspection?

Since eventually (whether it’s before the car is back on the road or after I’m not sure) I’ll be doing the lexus/550/walboro upgrade should I get the Aeromotive afpr and get it hooked up while the engine is out of the car? It looked like it could be a real pain to install once the engine is in the car. It wouldn’t hurt anything to have the adjustable pressure regulator in a stock system would it?

If I remember correctly, removing the old and installing the new struts and springs was a serious PITA, since I’m pulling them off of a parts car and nothing is broken is there maybe an entire assembly or something I could pull out to avoid the hassle of taking out those struts? Basically, any tips?

My Supras both have 150MPH speedometers and I wanted to go with whiteface gauges, every set I see for-sale is for the 160mph speedometer but I’ve seen some members here with whitefaced older gauges, where can they be purchased?

Also, I have a set of 3-pc tails on the way, I guess they’re JDM darker red ones if that matters, are there any write-ups on converting from older to newer style rears?

See, I told you there’d be questions, and those are just the first few that popped into my head…

#1 God luck! Looks like you'll be getting into every aspect of a rebuild/restoration.

#2 Replace all hoses, replace ALL bearings, all belts. Check your knock sensor wires while you have the harness out.

#3 You can install the AFPR either before or efter the engine goes back in- it's no more difficult either way. Running the AFPR without other fuel mods won't hurt anything at all.

#4 Installing struts/springs is really quite easy, but if you want, you can just drop the entire front and rear subframe assemblies and bolt the old ones in place.

#5 Gauges: www.speedhut.com

#6 89+ tail light swap is really a no-brainer. You won't need a writeup.

Thanks for the link to the gauges, those are exactly what I was looking for!

I'd been thinking about dropping the entire subframes, I'll probably go that route at least on the front since it looks like I'll need to take the steering rack off the parts-car and if I'm gonna be in there anyway...

Yeah, I thought the tail light swap looked easy, I just thought I remembered someone saying that the keyholes dont line up - I'll figure that out when the time comes...

Thanks a ton, I'm sure I'll have a bunch more questions after I put in a few more hours on the Supra this weekend!

The ones in the first pic of the blue Supe? It's been a long time but I think they were called Kosei Seneka 8's or somethin like that. I got them in a group buy thru SOGI 8 or 9 years ago...
