i live in sumiton al. thats about 15 minutes from jasper and about 20 minutes from birmingham. i live in walker county. i just bought my wife a 1989 turbo white, but the motor is bad. the car runs good but has low compression. i dont know how i'm going to fix it yet. i'm either going to buy a jdm motor or have hers rebuilt. any sugestions? where do you live?
It would be good to have it rebuilt. There are many threads on this topic alone, and a search will yield many findings.
But, a rebuilt engine is practically brand new, and you can't go wrong with that. I've heard bad stories from JDM's, even though the two I've purchased were flawless. As always, I'll recommend using a metal head gasket, and ARP head bolts torqued to 70-90ft. lbs.
My motor was rebuilt by Brother's Machine Shop, in Oxford, AL. Metal HG, Ross pistons .20 over, Clevite 77's everywhere, ARP headbolts, mains and bearing hardware too, and the Rods were reconditioned. This thing is ready for serious boost. For the rebuild to include the bearings, machining and labor, was $650 or so. The other parts were extra, but like I said, it's a brand new engine.
Also instruct the builder to use CLOSE tolerances, because 7M's need to be as close to the TSRM (factory manual) specs as possible if you want it to last. No "loose" size bearings or crap like that. The place that did mine specializes in Chevy V-8's (in Alabama, who doesn't?) so I was VERY specific with the builder, and I am a happy customer. If the builder will not talk to you about YOUR engine that he's building just for you, then there's a problem, and I'd walk away. My guy never, not once, recommended anything to me, he just listened, and executed. If you need help finding a place, I might be able to help, but I'm out of town for a while.
Cheers,
Jeff
