It can cause the car to stall when you come off the gas at low speed. Most ECU's seem to adapt...that is if everything else with the EFI/air induction is running correctly. I've had mine vented to the atmosphere and it only happens rarely. Usually going up an incline, under load and lifting my foot off the gas.

It's caused by a momentary rich condition...the stock BOV recirculates metered air to prevent it.

The only problem I have ever heard of with venting to the atmosphere is occasional, yet random stalling of the car. Other than that, nothing that I know of.

Edit: JDub got in first.

Depends on the car. Other problems (even minor vac leaks) will make the stall worse.

LOL...true statement...I get a few muffler pops now and then.
Hasn't seemed to hurt the CAT so far ;)

I used to have occasional backfires when driving without a cat. I now keep it in, and don't notice any backfires. I was worried about the ceramic and checked it, and it was 100% fine after several months of driving. (Magnaflow brand cat)

I tried to find a way to modify the dashpot to be twice as slow, but did not figure out how. I'm sure this would have solved most cases of stumbling/stalling. Maybe Jdub's smarts can figure that out for me? :) How to make the air flow out of it slower? It flows through a miniscule metal pinhole inside the valve.

I found the stalling with a vented bov very annoying. The ECU did eventually figure it out somewhat, but it still did occure. mostly at times when in heavy traffic, moving slowly like jdub said. Now that was VERY annoying lol. I just put the stock recirc back on because of it. just my .02

Brad - it's the VTV that controls the return to TB closed...pinch the vac line after running at 2500 RPM and release to idle. It should high idle for 1 sec, then go normal after you open the vac line.

You could try a new VTV...or use a shorter, smaller ID vac line between the dashpot and VTV. No promises this will work, but you could put 2 VTV's in series on the vac line.

The correct solution is to recirculate the BOV ;)

my car never really stalled, but i did get some crazy backfires sometimes. my wideband would also peg rich between shifts, but then i decided to recirc my ssqv, its been amazing ever since.. i ended up cutting out the hks SSQV fitting and then gluing it into the recirc fitting, so now it makes this very interesting noise lol.. it's like a shorter muffled hks sound... i likeit

I run the same set up, Lex AFM and GReddy BOV. Stalls every once in awhile on an uphill at low RPM but not bad at all. I am going to Recirc my new setup just because I don't like the rich hesitation inbetween shifts.

Nope...if someone tells you to adjust the idle stop screw or the air bypass screw on early TB's. Ignore it...they don't know what they are talking about and you will induce one of the problems I spoke about earlier. Like I said, most ECU's will adapt and you live with it...or, just recirculate the damn thing!

nevermind! found them. TitanMotorsports.com has them for dirt cheap. this is going to sound gay, but because the BOV is recirculated, does the BOV sound get eliminated?

Don't they have a threaded end?

not completely, but mostly.. you can still hear mine after recirc.. its not as loud but its enough to let me know its still hanging out under there.

Is there some kind of dense filter material that I could put inline with the VTV to slow it down? I did check my DP and it is working correctly. I also tried putting 2 VTV's in line but it did not make it slower. And for some strange reason, recirculating my BOV did not solve the stumbling problem. I'm guessing it might be my turbo leaking boost out of its worn seals.
