I happened across a tip on anther site and I wanted a little more info before I go and try this myself. On the AFM they said to take off the black cover and move the little metal peice out of the way and rotate the wheel 3-5 teeth counter clockwise. My question is what does this really do and is there any gain in it? Any infomation would be much appreciated. I don't want to go through the motions for no actual purpose.

I did that "MOD" and it fried the AFM. I wouldn't do it again, luckily I did it to a spare AFM. My CEL came on and if I rember correctly it was a code 24, intake temp or something like that. What it is supposed to do is relieve some tension on the door allowing it to open w/ less force and you can semi-modify your air-fuel raito but not by much. There wasn't really any gain and IMHO it isn't worth the hassle.

Thanks for the heads up. Like I said, if this was something that was that easy I would think that everyone would have done it/tried it. You just saved my daily driver.

:) Thats what were here for. If you had a spare AFM I would say give it a shot. You might have better luck than I did. Thats the only reason why I did it. Who knows, I could of messed up a sensor in there or mabey the altitude here had something to do w/ it not working.

The Lex is not interchangeable with your air flow meter. Tightening your clock spring doesn't fry the electronics either.

If you loosen the spring, it will definetly make your car richer. Which you do not need.

Your experiance is the I am asking and not just doing what other sites throw out there. I didn't really know what it would do or how it could help, but I thought that I would ask first and not cost myself more than I already have doing dumb things that someone else suggests.

Flapper door afms are fully open around or just above peak torque rpm. On my 3VZ it was around 3400 rpms. You can measure the voltage, 0-5v. Softening the spring will just make it richer everywhere before that rpm. You won't gain anything being too rich and after it's fully open it being softer won't gain anything.

That is what you should do. Keep it up.

I can't say search, because this doesn't come up 6 times a day like EGR and Code 51.

Yeah if will not fry the MAS if you do it write. It will infact cause a richer mixture. No need for it as in every case that I have seen, the mixture is to rich to begin with. Tightening it by a notch or two and playing with the sealed bypass screw has actually unlocked a few HP in some cases, but I have yet to try this on a Supra. This was on an older 1.6L Miata which actually uses that same flap door style MAS as the N/A supras.

On another note, about 3 years ago, I burned up a factory fel pro replacement with that mod. Or at least that is what I think. I tightened it a little bit to a good seat of the pants judgement. And a few months later my HG was burned between cylinders 3 and 4. Most likely a lean condition.

yeah, and thats why seat of the pants feel is not a way to tune a motor. I would not suggest changing it unless on a dyno and with a wideband.
