So I start my car and get codes 11 and 31. The code 11 was from my battery being dead, so I charged my battery, took out the EFI fuse and reset the codes.

Code 31 = AFM.

OK so then I check the AFM black box electronics (both my stock Supra one and the Lexus one from a 94 SC400). Well ends up both are bad with the multimeter test. The cable to the AFM is fine as I checked that with a multimeter and it passed.

Does the AFM electronics part go bad often? Is there a cause for this? I am just wondering if I get a new one and will go through that one too.

I know you are not supposed to clean the AFM with any spray, as it will kill the lens. Any other precautions?

Over oiling the K&N, cleaning it, and running with out the filter are common reasons for it to fail.

I haven't seen any older Toyota air flow meters fail on their own(doesn't mean they don't). The most common was the newer hot wire mass air flow sensor that was contaminated. That style is just more sensitive to dirt I guess.
