Adjust your valves!!!

I have about 1000 miles on this head since it was rebuilt by a local speed shop. I had them install a set of cams out of a N/A 7M, and of course they adjusted the valves to the new cams. While I was installing the head, I noticed that they had graciously left me a "bonus" shim wedged down in the head bolt valley. Now, this should have been a clue as to how much attention they paid to the rebuild of this head. When the car was first started after the install, it ran great and the valvetrain was very quiet. But after running for about 20 minutes, the valves progressively got louder until it was , in my opinion, louder than it should be. I contacted the speed shop to let them know that the valves seemed quite loud to me and after several more calls and no replies, I figured fu*k it, it should be fine. Well, it was for a little while until the shim found it's way out of the lifter and wedged itself between the cam lobe and the head, stopping the cam and shearing off the cam gear indexing pin and retaining bolt. This is the second time that a shim has come out of a lifter in about 2000 miles.....Has this ever happened to anyone else???????

Generally that's only a problem when running high lift cams. However, if they are way too loose I guess that could cause this too. In the shop's defense I must add that it's very hard to accurately shim them on a bench. It's best to go back and do it again after the engine has been through a handfull of heat cycles.

Never heard of it happening.

I'd take it back to the shop and get, at least, my money back.

Thats the plan... I hope that he will at least admit that it was his fault this time. The last time it happened the shim broke into 3 peices, sparing the pin but wiped out the lobe. The guy tried to tell me that the shim broke first, then flew out of the lifter. This is quite possible, but he can't deny this one..

Wow.......that sucks man...........quick ? were you running the n/a cams at island? And what was your reason for the head rebuild?

Yeah I had the n/a cams in then. I had the head redone because I had a shim break and it wedged the #3 front exhaust valve open. It looked to me like the shim came out first and then got smashed by the cam and broke. The guy at the shop told me that the shim probably broke first and then came out and wedged the valve open. Either way, this time the shim is intact, so he has no excuses. I talked to him yesterday and he is going to make good on it. He offered to buy the parts that i need to replace and show me how to set the valve lash. Hope to be running again soon..... ---Jim

They supposedly have a hotter grind (at least the intake anyway, I heard that the exhaust cams are the same), but I havent been able to find any specs. I bought them because my exhaust cam got wiped out after the first shim incident. I found the pair on ebay for $100. I think they gave more power, but I'm not sure. It might have been the fact that I was driving my slow ass "makes a bicycle seem fast" Camry during the down time.....

mmm... I read the exact page of the with the dyno graph and everything. The exhaust cam has a more aggressive lift which gave an additional 22 HP.

Hey guys it's not an issue of the cam lift here. The shop had the wrong shims in, the clearance was not right. The engine ran ok until the bind was to much and spit the shim out. The same happens with high lift cams. But the lobe catches the edge of the shim and flips it out.

Yeah. Bottom line is the shop f'd up. I was just curious to see how much better, if at all, the n/a cams are- either dyno charts or lift/duration specs.
