How often should i take my supra in to get a full trans flush and filter change? I wanted to do it since i havent changed it yet.

Whats the usual price for a full flush and should i only trust the dealer?

Or is it something i can do on my own, id like to do a full flush & filter change :)

You should do it at least twice a year if you have any upgrades at all. Also, you can't simply drain all the fluid from the pan, you have to hook it up to an external fluid exchanger & let the transmissions pump cycle it out.

oil change joints will do it for about $60, make sure they have the machine that actually hooks into the trans lines and totally flushes all the fluid, then come home and change the filter

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Did I mention I said NO!

Trans "Flushes" are the quickest way to destroy a torque converter. Why? What happens is mr tech hooks up the trans flush machine, it pumps nice hot SOLVENT through the ENTIRE TRANSMISSION, including the torque converter. Well the T/C has a low spot in it, and all that nice solvent gets trapped there.

Whala!

Put in new fluid, start driving and the thing explodes!

Why? The solvent that was trapped in the T/C escaped, and ATE/DISSOLVED/DILUTED/DESTROYED/YADA YADA your new ATF fluid.

PLEASE do not buy into the "$24.95 transflush" gimick.

Is it o.k. to just drain the fluid, and change the filter? I used to work at a oil change place and we did transmision fluid changes also. The owner said that if your car had over 75000 miles on it and had never had the transmision fluid changed then it was better to not change it. I cant remember why, but he swore by it. He said to just drive it until it broke down, and then have it rebuilt. Does anyone else have an opinion?

Huh? I don't know what kind of flush you're talking about, the one I mentioned is done with the car running at about 1500 rpm, no way anything is trapped and you can see the old fluid coming into the machine. Isn't any way this was bad for my trans

i had just suffered the "contaminated tranny" blues. it screwed up my overdrive, and i figured it would be best just to replace it vs trying to get it fixed. i heard that you want to change the fluid while the car is idling, maybe have a dump bucket hooked up to tranny line, and have a fresh fluid bucket going to the inlet to the tranny.anyone?

it depends on how the flush is done. but the safe way to do it for sure is of course the long way. drain the tranny, will get about a qt or so. refill w/ fresh fluid. drive around. repeat. do this til you have used 10-12 qts and you will be good.

MDC: it's voila, lol

OK!!
I see this all the time.
It IS safe to get a Transmission Flush.
As long as they don't use the solvent. Get a flush, make them put, in writing, that they will not use the solvent. (it's only a can that they pour into the transmission filler before they start the flush)
That's the dangerous shit!
So, have them do the flush, sans cleaner.
Then, I would bring it home and change the filter, because where do you think all the loose junk goes? It clogs the filter over time.

You should be safe.

BTW: when they do a flush, they use 16qts of ATF. just a fyi.

there is a way to do it yourself. disconnect both cooler lines. find out which one is the suction line and place it in a clean container filled with ATF. plumb the return line to a container suited to hold as many quarts as you plan to flush through it.
a helper is probably a great idea...
when you're done flushing, let's say 12 qts through it, the fluid should be coming out clean and a nice red. shut the car off, reconnect lines to cooler and drain the pan. drop the pan down, replace filter. replace pan and top off.

Easy, right?
