I can't figure out how to remove the A pillar trim that's around the door weather stripping. the P.O. put the LEFT on the RIGH! so they're swapped and you can tell by looking at the tops, they don't fit around the targa right! what a freakin idiot!
Are you talking about the black plastic trim pieces on the outside of the car right behind the doors? I am not sure what you are talking about. If you are talking about the trim pieces behind the door they have to be removed from the inside of the car its a pain in the ass but I can tell you how to do it.

the blk trim peice near the side view mirror. you can see on the 2nd pic the notch around the Targa doesn't fit right. b/c they put the left/right on swapped.
On the mkII you can just open the door, take the bottom screw out and pretty much slide it out through the opening between the door and fender. Never had it off a mkIII though. There are probably screws in the Targa though.
never mind what I posted earlier. I'd like to know to since mine need replacing. I thing they just pry off. My interior is aprat right now, and there are no screws or anything from the inside holding it together. All I can say is pry it off.
Yes, they kind of like just pullout of the grove they fit in. My car is in storage 200 miles away for the winter so I cant walk out to it and look. If I remember correctly you can almost role them out. After I repainted my car I think I just kind of stuck them back in the groves and roled them in. Anyway they just snap in you cant break anything so go for it.
