Hey all,
I'm actually working on a project for one of my engineering classes and my team is "building" a racecar. We're doing cost analysis between going with turbo, supercharing or staying NA and I just need to know about how much a month is the maintenance cost on a car with turbo? My car is NA so I've got that one covered, heh. Thanks in advnace!:1zhelp:

any car that has pressurized air feeding the engine will be on a shorter lifespan than a N/A engine.

why arent there many turbo cars running around today? cost effectiveness to keep them running.

n/a is simple.

IMO turbo/na/supercharged will all cost the same if unmodified. Insurance will change of course, but basic maintence is still plugs/wires/filters/etc no matter if your forced induction or not. People run into problems with any of them as soon as you start modding without proper tuning or knowledge of what your doing. I've never blown a H/G on any of my (let's see.....1.2.3.4...) 7 Supras. Some turbo, some n/a. Basic maintence is all that's really required unless your doing something different.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to take into account that with a turbo car, I personally run premium fuel and synthetic fluids. Some may, some may not.

IMO work required on a racecar will always be a lot more. Most people build racecars are willing to sacrifice some things for power so it differs a lot between pay/power and budgit/all out. Turbo might be good in a race car because the get tended to alot. N/A may be a good choice for other various budget choices. HOpe you understand i gotta go.

well, my 7mgte buildup, including the fully built engine, all boltons, trans swap, diff upgrade, suspension upgrade, rims, tires, brakes, cage, and other misc saftey equipment on the car, id say your looking at easilly $35k on top of the price of a mkii. for mkiii, itd be more for a mkiii as diff upgrades, brake upgrades, suspension ,etc.. are all a bit more, though engine and trans stuff is the same. so far ive got about $20k in my black 84 not counting the stuff ive bought for the buildup(and i still need a paint job too). so figure $7-8 k for the built longblock, another $6-7 k for all the bolt ons(standalone, turbo mani, turbo, injectors, twin pumps, injectors, i/c, piping, etc...) then another $2k on my trans swap, then the money for the 5 point roll bar and driveshaft loop, trans blanket, flex plate sheild, etc... to be legal at the track(damped pulley is in the long block price.) and this is with me doing all the labor myself except what is absolutly required by a machine shop. have fun with it. i love doing it but wish i made at least 3 times what i make now a year. i really need to hit the lotto.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I just needed to know some of the basic costs associated with maintaining a turbo because we have to do all this cost analysis, benefits to costs ratio and a bunch of other crap and we have to chose a plan and prove why it's more feasable than the other. We tried to go with NA and justify it as being the best because it was the cheapest...but then the question was posed would be just lose all of our money running an NA car that loses every race for an entire season? So yeah, I'm just tryin to figure out cost/power wise, which is better, turbo or supercharing. Thanks again for the feedback!

First off , what type of race car is it going to be? (road racing, drag racing, ect.) Second, what are the rules? There are a lot of factors that come into figuring cost besides weather or not it is N/A of forced induction. I would totally forget about using a supercharger and focus more on turbo or N/A. one of the big deciding factors is what is the finished weight of the car and are there any motor size and HP limits? Is there a particular motor that you have to use?

As for maintenance, being a race car, they should be pretty much the same for both turbo and N/A

In street cars, yes typically an N/A car will have a longer life, but in race typically a turbo car will be longer lived depending on the race sactioning bodies rules for engine size, weight, HP, ect.......
