So in looking for a car lately, i discovered a car that i've never seen, a 1991 BMW 5-series M5. Has a 3.6L supposedly bullet proof engine good for 200k. After reading up on them, and there engines and what not, im pretty interested in them, and there under 10k. AND RWD!!!!

So, has anybody ever owned a 1991 to 1993 5-series? especially the M5?

Just curious.

I had a 520i for a while during my first year of uni, before it got vandalised, looted and burned in the university car park....

They're solid cars though, very good build quality and yes, the engine, if well maintained, will run for ever - think of it like the energizer bunny....just keeps going and going and going....

One thing you should look out for is whether or not you have NikaSil or AluSil cylinder liners - theres a list on the net somewhere as to which you have. If you have Nikasil....there are horror stories about them. Read up on it to get a full picture.

i had a friend who had an e34 M5... never drove it but man it was fun to ride in. Very smooth, but put on the speed quickly. Can't tell ya much about the handling as we were in FL and there are no good roads in south florida. But its very comfortable, and wisks along quite well.

And I absolutely love e34s :)

The 97 M3 we have is great. BMW's are generally good. Some times there are small electrical issues but are generally easy to fix.

No 97's... wayyy too much. haha.

I like the 91 to 93... plus its a 4-door, and it has a 3.6L that i could always turbo or supercharge later if i wanted to make it even faster, just have to drop it from the 10:1 compression to like 9:1 or 8.5:1.
I want to find one and go test drive it to see if i really like it or not.

Well mine was only the 2.0 litre 12v SOHC, so it felt a bit sluggish - but it wasn't exactly slow. Took a while to get to 70mph, but once there it would happily sit there all day long.

The only BMW i've driven with a larger engine than that, was the 1998 M3 - which was insane. Not as grunty as a 7M though...

I picked up a E34 530 two weeks ago and am overall pretty impressed with it. Build quality is superb (as you would expect in a BMW), the boot is surprisingly large, there is plenty of interior space (I can find comfortably in the back ,and I'm hardly a small guy) and handles the road really, really well for a barge.

How was the performance of the car? i know it says it has like 300HP, but does it FEEL like it has that kind of power?

Well, despite the 530 making slightly more horsepower than the supra, it just doesn't feel all that fast. It is quicker, don't get me wrong, but it just is a bit lacking in "oomph" went compared to the supra. Maybe the M5 is a different beast?

My dad has one and i've driven it plenty of times.

heres the problems
GAS MILAGE. 12-14 mpg
repair prices, slightly different parts then the normal e34 mean MUCH higher repair bills
Accumulators, car has self leveling and these go bad. You will know cause the rear of the car bounces everywhere. when they do its 120 or so a piece, and about 1-2 hours to replace if you have the right tools.
Aftermarket-intrax makes springs and i belive one shock company makes shocks for it. if one shock goes bad its expensive to have rebuilt, or you change your entire suspention.
interior- my dads door panels have pulled away from the backing on all four doors. doesnt effect the mechanical nature, but it looks like shit. My dads is a WELL maintained example too.
Oil leaks- this engine is KNOWN for them, not just his car, all of them. not huge but its rather embarasing when you cant park your car on someones driveway.

My dad's is strictly a weekend car, and while he loves it it's not to practicle for someone daily driving it OR who cant afford a repair bill.

My dad has also had a 94 530 touring. The transmissions are shit on those. he sold his as the tranny was failing.

I see some very valid points, especially the repair bills, but i do all my own repairs, whether its rebuilding an engine or replacing the spark plugs.

The Hydralic Load Leveling (HLL) I can eliminate with a bilstein suspension, or a koni suspension... that i see as a little mishap. And why would you change ALL your struts/shocks if one went bad? that doesnt make sense to me...

And i'll go look into that oil leak problem... so far i've never seen a thread about somebody complaining about that... but im still researching and looking.

A 1991 M3 vs a 1991 M5 is basically the engine right? along with a bunch of other stuff im sure...

Keep the feedback coming though. Its suprising how many people know about these cars.

thats great you do your own repairs. that doesnt discount the cost of the parts though. BTW they require valve adjustments often AND you need to syncronise the TB's too.

if you decide to eliminate the load leveling system thats fine. just consider you have to buy the shocks and springs, since the LL springs on the rear are much softer then normal springs. not a big deal, just consider 600-700 dollars for the parts.

the oil leak is something my dad told me. every e34 m5 seems to leak a bit of oil. its really not much but yea it does it.

the s14 (e30) and the e34 m5 engine being simaler im not sure they both use individual TB's is about as far as I know.

seriously, as a daily driver for someone not making a ton of money, or young, its not the car you want. ther are PLENTY of other cars which are faster, more reliable, and get better gas milage. and at the end of the day it's just a 4 door sedan with super high repair costs.

also, its really not that fast.... my clk 430 feels just as fast if not faster then my dads m5... and thats with a full sterio and 19's son!

My dads also had a dinan chip which helps with a flat spot at 3500.

The M3 from '91 did indeed use the S14 engine - but thats an I4 DOHC 2.5litre

The M5 from '91 used the S38B36 in the US and the S38B38 everywhere else - which was a 3.5 (and 3.8) litre DOHC 24v I6 powerplant...

And like CK said - they're heavy and expensive to run/maintain....a Supra will look cheap in comparison (well, over there anyway) :p
