89+ Climate Control Plug and Play with an 88???

Hey guys, hope this isn't a stupid question but I was wondering if a 89+ climate control is plug and play with the wiring from an 88. And if it is, how do you do the LED bulb replacement? I've heard of many guys doing this and was wondering if it made that big of a difference or what. Thanks

Yes but there's one vent selection that isn't on your 88

To do the LED replacement you have to carefully open up the unit. Carefully because the clips in side are about 20 years old and brittle. Then after it is open you have to replace all the LEDS. Here are a few that I made a few years ago.

Yeah, it takes a good 2+ hrs to replace all led's, remove the green display lens, and solder in a new mount for the display.
Tools required/ suggested:
jewler's screwdriver set
dental-type picks
soldering iron and solder
desoldering iron or solder whick
magnifying glass or glasses
appropriate led's of the proper mcd(i like <1,000mcd)
.4" replacement dual 7-segment display, your choice of color(common anode type)
heavy gauge tinted plastic sheet to cut/replace green lens
multi-meter to test led install

What has to be soldered? I would think that you just need to pull out the LEDs and plug in new ones. Where do you get that particular size? and what size is it? I got lots of questions but no answers haha.

The LED's are soldered to the PCB.

It's quite a bit of work. I had to repair the LED's on my unit when I bought it.

Where did you get your LEDs at? I was looking at superbrightleds.com but could only find T-1 3/4 size. If that is right then what viewing angle should I get? Here's the page I'm looking at and I want to get something that will match Cool White as that's what my gauges will be. Thanks for all the help so far guys.

You should be able to just go to radio shack to get the proper leds. Usually the people that work there don't know there asses from a hole in the ground when it comes to electronic components but they usually have a box with drawers full of led and solid state electronic parts, should be able to find the display too. Just depends on how much of a selection the store near you has. Now that all said I am not sure if they are gonna have any warm white though.

Same here, and you'll NEVER get the right led's at Radio Shack. They only have like two T-1's in stock, and they'll be the wrong luminosity.
Go Hong Kong or Mouser electronics.
PS- T-1 3/4's are the wrong size.

Yea I didn't think about needing a higher mcd for the application. They do have some better ones but they are more expensive ie $2 each, I have used them in a pinch, but there is only one store I know of that has a really good selection of leds.

You want an mcd that is actually lower than most that are sold.
Having said that, Some of the ones sold at Radio Shack are actually too weak, like 10mcd.
You want about ~400-1,000 mcd for the led's, in my opinion. Most on Ebay are in the 4,000 to 15,000 range
and will totally blind you. You have to really search for them.

Alright so I'm looking for the correct mcd range now but what size and angle should they be? And how many exactly? I really only want to have to do this once.

T-1 aka- 3mm.
You'll need 13 indicator led's, one display
and 16 backlight led's.
DON'T apply more than ~3volts to them if you test em.
