I wento the junkyard today in search of a tranny. I have a 1989 NA auto with no ABS. The junkyard has only the 88 style trannys. What is the difference between the 88 and 89 style? Can I use a 88 style? Can I use a tranny that is ABS equiped in my non ABS car? They have plenty of 86-88 trannys but thats it. Can someone tell me if its possible to run a 88 style??

Thx
Eric

The tranny itself didn't change iirc. The only variations were that the the N/As had W58s and the turbos had R154s.

Okay - i got no beef, but i wanted to check if you were persona non grata still. If its all cleared up, then thats okay.

As for the differences, i think its something to do with the clutch, there are different clutches for the year change.

The 340E is pretty much the same for the GE & GTE. The GE has a lower stall torque converter and a different ETC shift schedule.

Shift points on the auto are different for some one who seems to be an ebay scammer you ask alot of questions you may want to use this it works wonders.

The programing of the shift schedule is differnent because they GE and GTE have a different final drive ratio. This is done to prevent overspeed of the trans.

The GTE is a little bit beefer inside, not with the gears, but the clutch pack and a piston. The 89 and newer are also upgraded slightly over the 86.5-88.

I'm with Nick, and there were some valve body improvements made, change from steel to rubber check balls. Using ABS in non ABS should be no problem, but if you go the other way you'll need to swap sensor ring and sensor. Older GE in an 89 GE I would think ok.

They will work and like Ken said, the valve bodies had a few changes, but none that would stop you from using the transmission in your car.
