Is there any difference between years of mk3 A340E transmissions? What about the speed sensors and ECUs?

I'm asking because I had a JDM engine/tranny put in (don't know what yr) and the no2 speed sensor I got from toyota (just by asking them to order it for me and not look anything up) didn't fit for some reason, it was a 2 wire when I needed 4, plus it was a slightly different shape. So I pulled the part off the tranny and ordered that exact one, and got a 4 wire no2 speed sensor, but I don't know if it solved my problem, and it got me thinking maybe the tranny or ECU or something is not compatible between 86.5-88 vs 89+?

Oddly enough, for both the 2-wire and 4-wire no2 speed sensor, they both use a 4-prong adapter.

Anyone have any idea if the transmissions are the same mechanically?
Are the ECU's and all electronics identical?
Could the JDM vs USDM no2 speed sensors be different?????

The A340E was used behind all RWD high output powerplants. Or its cousins, like the A341, and A342. Specifically yes, there are differences. Even internally, the clutch packs were upgraded for more holding power. If the parts counter searched under your VIN, then the part that doesnt fit is probably right, and the trans you picked up is technically for something else. Was the trans and engine bolted together in the crate? Like they came that way from the factory?

I really have no idea unfortunately. I had my car in storage for a long time, and my dad thought he would "surprise me" by pulling it out and having a shop put a JDM engine/tranny in it, I was not involved in the process at all, I wish I was.

My car is also Canadian (although I'm now in the US) so I don't know how that plays a part in this if any.... I'm just trying to figure it all out. The dealer didn't look it up by VIN#, they looked it up by year/make (88 turbo auto). Maybe I'll have them run it by the VIN# and see if that makes any difference.

If anyone else has any info on the differences of JDM vs USDM or 86.5-88 vs 89+ please let me know. Thank you.

I know a few....

the speed sensor has got to be one that matches the connectors, as well as the year (ABS/ECT)... Basically, if you have ABS the ECT gets the signal from/through the ABS. I am still dealing with mine and haven't figured it out. Tho I am about to try another ABS computer from a '91.

If they changed everything over from the original US motor, you should be okay...but, there are alot of differences in the engine harness, as well as things like temp sensors at the thermostat housing. I have an 87 engine/ECU, 89 engine harness, and 91 body harnesses... so I'm worse off than U. Still get code 61 (no2 speed sensor) and have 3 ECT computers, and 4 ABS computers, for the various years that I've tried in different combinations.

Wish I could help ya more, but the only thing I knew for sure was that the 89+ JDM engine had the same sensors as the pre-89 US ones.

Sorry, just letting ya know that some of us share the same issues (still unresolved).

And BTW: Mine in a 90 Candian model Sup, that's undergone a 1JZ and 2JZ swap, just to end up back with a 7M. More hands have touched the wiring and engines than I can count.
