I recently installed a 1.2mm thick metal headgasket in my 7mgte. The gasket was not blown but i figured i would do this as a precautionary measure. I also installed a lexus afm and of course a new timing belt, water pump, etc. The car had a bad before i ripped it apart so it would idle but that was it. I also bought lucas 550cc injectors but have not installed them yet. I had planned on keeping the boost levels down and making sure everything was kosher before i installed the new injectors. I reassembled everything back the way it had been when i had taken it apart. When i went to start the car it did not start. I checked the fuel and its getting fuel. I checked for spark and it has spark. Is there any suggestions here. Everything seems grounded correctly. I am stumped. Is there anything else that needs to be done when i installed the new afm? any help would more than appreciated. Thanks guys

I third that...because it just happened to me last night. I just put in my rebuilt motor and it would crank over but would not start. First it was the fuel pressure regulator leaking (which caused a small fire, close one) then it started backfiring when I cranked it. I checked my timing and I was off by one tooth on the cps. I realigned the timing markes and moved the cps one tooth backwards and it fired right up with no hesitations...if it backfires, it's a really good chance your timing is off. How did you align your timing???
Agree, backfire usually is an indicator of bad timing between spark (cps / distributer), crank and cam marks. When you tested for gas, did you dump some down the cylinders /TB that may have caused the backfire?

I once had my car run with about 30-40 degrees ATDC base ignition timing, back a couple years ago when I removed the CPS to replace the O-ring and didn't know how it went back in. Ran at about 250-300 rpm but it ran and idled. Double check valve timing as well as ignition timing. People think as long as the crank pulley mark lines up with 0 on the lower timing cover they are all set to install a distributor or CPS. Little do they know there are 2 TDC's on any 4 stroke engine........ Pull that upper timing cover off and personally, visually confirm all matchmarks line up and the CPS is installed correctly. Then have fun!!

You installed a lexus afm, but did not install the 550 injectors. Put your stock afm back in until you install the 550's, you have to do both at once.

It should still START with the Lexus AFM and the 440s, but it isn't a good idea to do both. That's just asking for a lean condition when you least expect it, which is usually followed by an engine making unpleasant noises.
im gonna sound like an idiot here but which thing is the cps? Does anyone have a picture showing where it is located? Does it have a mark on it to show how it needs to be aligned?
Maybe it's me but how can you be doing things like head gasket changes and not know what or where the CPS is? And do have a service manual?
i dont know what the cps is because i bought the supra in a thousand peices and built it up. sorry i dont know the correct term for everything under the hood. but ne way i put the harmonic balancer notch on zero and she started to idle then died. do i need to advance past zero? there is 5-10-and 15. what number should i be on?
If you built it from a thousand pieces that's all the more reason to have bought a manual. So I guess the answer is no...

CPS is the Cam Positioning Sensor. what would be the distributor, if it i were an n/a car. it has to be clocked correctly just like a distr. also make sure all your timing marks are lined up. such as cam gear marks pointing straight up,and crank mark on 0.
after all that is correct, then jump your terminals to set base timing to above mentioned degrees.
