I've been looking for a rebuilt gte head for some time now, and one SM member recommended http://www.cylinder-heads.com

This seems to be a competent company and the guy I talked to seemed knowledgeable. However, they sell gte and ge heads as the same thing, which they are, but I was under the impression the intake cam differed. The company told me that they've mic'ed the cams and that the duration and lift were the same between the gte and ge heads. They are willing to work with me, and will send me a gte head, but they don't know how to differentiate between the two.

Some specs I've seen posted on SM are:

13501-42020 - 86-87 N/A Intake Cam (38.36mm Lift)
13501-42030 - 88-92 N/A Intake Cam (38.16mm Lift)
13501-42010 - Turbo Intake Cam (38.35mm Lift)

It looks to me like the 86-87 N/A is almost identical to the Turbo, or is the duration different? Could their mic'ing results be correct?
Is there a way to tell the difference between gte heads and ge heads so I can be sure that what I get is a gte head?

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I've been unable to answer my question with the search button.

Thanks
Ryan

Probably because so many people bought a GE intake cam off ebay. They are different as noted. Not by much, but enough to matter.

even if you do end up getting a "ge" head, just swap the intake cam from a gte from a junkyard or get one from here... there pretty easy to come by, and i dont think you'll have a noticable difference if your on a BPU setup... if you were pushing A LOT through the engine, then i would think so... but for the most part its not that big of a deal.

So I've got one person who thinks it matters and one who says its not a big deal. While I appreciate the comments, I have already seen what has been said here with the help of the search button.
The question I'm looking for an answer to is, is there a way to determine what's a gte head and what's a ge head? Casting codes? Anything?
SM experts have anything to say? (besides to tell me to stfu)

The heads are identical, as stated, the intake cams are different for the turbo. There's no way I know of that you can tell which cam it is unless you measure the lobes. If you already have a turbo head, just swap the cam into the new head.

A couple things that you want to consider when buying a head form one of these places:
- Measure it's thickness...an un-cut head is 116mm from deck to cam cover sealing surface.
- Have it hardness tested to make sure it was not overheated and annealed.
- If you're planning to use a MHG, the deck has to meet the RA (smoothness) spec for the MHG.
- Check all of the valve shim clearances...don't assume they are correct.

Thanks, for the info jdub. Yes, I've already ordered one rebuilt head, that measured ~114mm and it was promptly returned. My last head scored up the cams and journals pretty bad, not just the babbit material, it's scored, bad.

Would it be possible to polish and reuse that?

Concerning the rebuilt head, I'm fubar on determining whether its a turbo head or not?

Yeah, those look pretty bad...especially the head. The head *may* be able to be fixed with a line hone...the cams, I don't think so. What does the rest of the cam journals look like?

It's a crap shoot. If you get a new head, just measure the lobes on your turbo intake cam and compare to the same cam on the new head.

Well, no. You didn't get two different answers.

The tubo intake lobes look more pointy. Non-turbo lobes have a slight bulge on the sides. The lift is the same. Non-turbos need to gulp more air since there is no positive pressure pushing it in.
