7M-GTE poor idle after fresh rebuild

Hey guys. So, i finally managed to get everything back together, and plug in the starter (bastard to get in there). Oil was refilled (10w40), and coolant was refilled.

Primed for 30 seconds to get the oil pressure up - everything looked good, there were no ominous noises coming from anywhere, all the belts were taut, so i plugged in the EFI fuse and cranked. It sputtered into life, but idled really badly. I thought 'okay, it's just the initial startup, it might be that'. Tried to give it some throttle. It died.

Started again, wouldn't start without throttle that time. Then it'd hit about 700/800rpm with a little throttle but foot flat to the floor did nothing, but kill it, and letting go of the throttle caused it to either die, or idle at 400rpm for a little bit before just going 'fuck this' and dying anyway.

All the vacuum connections have been checked, and i can't see a leak anywhere. The cam/crank timing is exact, it was checked several times before the belt was tensioned up. Could it be the CPS is out of alignment?

There's also exhaust fumes coming from the exhaust side, i'm guessing from the turbo to elbow, as i didn't tighten it as much as i probably should have, but would that affect the idling?

I recorded a video for you guys, so you can see what's going on for yourself. Please excuse the mess on the floor.

Thanks in advance chaps :)

It's the cps.
The way to verify this, is to remove the timing adjustment(cps hold-down) bolt, and rotate the cps about 5 degrees either way beyond its normal range of adjustment. If it runs smoother(which it will), that means you have to insert the cps one tooth in the direction of where you rotated it.

Yep - turned out to be the CPS, i think it's off by a tooth, as i've set the crank/cam to TDC again, but the CPS still didn't go in right. However, now, it idles around 550rpm and it'll rev to 3000rpm.

It's a fiddly arse of a job. I'll do some more tomorrow, when it, and me, have cooled down!

All sorted out - CPS put in place like so:

With the crank and cams set to 0* TDC - i'm doing the timing light jobs tomorrow, but it catches and starts first time every time now :)

Running stock electronics on that Lexus AFM?
I notice you only have one vacuum hose going to the throttle body. Was it because you removed your EGR? Is that port on the throttle body plugged as well? You have no vacuum lines going to or from your BVSV as well. Will that make a difference on your idle quality?

Yes, stock electronics. For now. UK Spec Supra's don't use the BVSV for anything. And no, there's no EGR. There's also no catalytic converter, charcoal canister (our tanks vent to atmosphere) and our vacuum system is vastly simplified.

Yeah i figured that much - although i've narrowed down the idle issue after the CPS (going from 750 to 950rpm) to a missing vacuum connection between the accordion hose and the PS pump idle up valve - i think. Check my build thread IJ - you'll see a video of it running :)
