hey guys, im not one to post stuff, but i am baffled, i have a rough idle to the point where it will die, but fire right off again, sit there and idle good for a sec then repeat, also at 2k to around 3k it runs rough, now i have been told to adjust my tps, but dont wanna go messing with anything im unfamilier with and piss the car off :). im not heavaly moded, just lexus afm, 3" exhaust with cat delete, manual booster set at 10psi, head redone with mls cometic gasket, aluminum intercooler with hard piping and greddy b.o.v. it has not set off a code yet, also the idle is very low, around 500ish. how would i set that. ran fine untill the head job and gasket. any sugj?:1zhelp: :wtf: :bigun2:

why do you have a lexus AFM? Letting more air in with the lex afm, without having injectors and fuel pump to accompany it, could be half the problem, it also sounds like you need to check the timing.

You are probably running insanely lean, and it WILL eat you engine alive.

I would start by looking over the coldside of your engine. Check all vacume lines, maybe on poped off or cracked open.

Then i would head over the the throttle body and adjust your TPS. You say you dont wanna piss your car off, but to me it sounds like adjusting the TPS couldnt do anything worse than what your cars doing now :)

Where in Stockton you at? Get a can of carb or f/i cleaner and spray it all over your engine. If your engine idles smooth when sprayed over a certain area, you have a vac leak.

Most of us dont lke to take shortcuts ;)

Spraying shit all over my engine, is something which i would never do. Take the time and individully inspect all the vacume lines.

isnt there a sertain way to adjust the tps? or do i just loosen it up till i get a smooth idle?! i was under the impression that it was a bad thing to mess with the setting. although i think that is was messed with already with out my knowledge. i was going to this weekend but i found that the bottom screw is a little hard to get to. any sugjetions?

I had the exact same symptoms as you, ended up being a damaged (new) intake manifold gasket.

Not sure if this is your problem, but I thought I would mention it.

Luckily carb cleaner helps detect the effected area. Instead of wasting time digging through vacuum lines that are good and you have a possible fuel injector rubber O ring seal or a EGR or intake manifold gasket.

Also, checking the throttle body coupler. Thats where my Supras and Cressidas have had leaks. Replace or tightening them does wonders. Mis adjusted TPS usually is diagnosed with high revs, lack of power, stuff like that.

when adjusting the TPS use aligator clips insted to the two little probes one the mulit meter, they are a lifesaver in this sort of situation.
also check spark plug wires, coil packs, and CPS. i had a similar problem and it turned out it was the result of a bad CPS

I'm having a similar problem, but I recently had all the vac lines replaced, and the problem has decreased, but is still there to a small degree. Also it has a hard time starting and if I dont hit the gas real quick when it starts it will stall right out again when its a little cold (maybe 40F). I also have some kind of A/F meter that the previous owner put in, but most of the time it spazzes between lean and rich like all the time when im driving it, so I'm not sure if its working right. I have the stock fuel system, but the whole engine is stock so I didnt figure that was the problem...

olah all, hope everyone had a most excellent gobble day, to answer your question dizzle the car is a red 87t hard top. i got it from a friend in galt a few years back whom from what ive gathered really didnt have full posession of the car therefor should not have sold it, lol. but..... thats his problem, i never even thought of checking the intake gasket cause the head was just rebuilt. i re adjusted the timing again and it seems to have cured the low idle, i set the base timing at 10*. is this correct? i also have kinda a lame question, i have an hks sqv b.o.v. on it with all the hard piping, it has a little screw on the back that i am assuming is an adjustment of some kind, my best edjumacated guess is that it regulates when it opens, my question is could having that screw bee too loose, or tight, cause the valve to leak boost?i am assuming not since it is a pull type and not a push type b.o.v. the manual boosted my friend has on there is definatly a "home depo" special, and looks like it is off of his air compressor lol, p.o.s. to say the least, anyone know where i can get a used or inexpencive new boost controller?! i kinda like the looks of the pro spec II, but anything would be great. i will post the results of the intake leak check in a few, till then.......

Definitely go with an electric boost controller. Best bet would be to look on Craigslist, the for-sale section or on eBay.

I found my AVC-R on Craigslist. It was actually from your city, Stockton.
