Has anyone ever purchased an engine from www.risingsunengines.com? I just bought a 7m-gte from them today and they seem pretty reputable. They brag more than most websites about the amount of testing they do on their engines and the kind of testing. Anyway, it was $1095 for the complete longblock and $130 to ship it. Found a few that were cheaper on ebay but I was skeptical about buying an engine from ebay. Anyway I guess my final question is; has anyone done business with Rising Sun Engines before? Hope nobody tells me they are horrible...

Thanks!

I have not personally, but one of the bad things about buying a motor is that there is no way to actually be sure that the motor has the milage they claim it has.

There is a company the sells on ebay that is located on the east coast of Canada and takes pics of the odometer to prove it. However I think that is only for complete front clips for 1J conversions.

I bought a 7M-GE from them, yeah they claimed to check out the engine. The sent me a Cressida motor. Not a major pain but not what I ordered. My mechanic at the time did not tell me but it had gasoline in the oil pan(to break up gunk in bottom of oil pan ?) And the water passages had severe rusting. I got about 70 miles when it developed rod nock even though I had installed a new pump. They will not pay for shipping back and would not guarantee replacing the engine if I did and shipping was $400(to Alabama) So I ended up using bits from this motor and bits from my old motor to make a Franken motor. I ended up shelling out way to much money and still had a piece of crap NA motor that lasted about 20000(died in an autocross). So from this experience I have determined that no matter how good a reputation the place has(I checked with BBB and they came up good) in the used engine business NO ONE can or will really guarantee the condition of a used engine and be wary of anyone who does. Plan on doing a thorough tear down and investigation (measure all tolerances) of the engine and plan on replacing bearings, gaskets, seals, oil and water pump ect. If you don’t do this you’re playing Russian roulette. Good luck

If you bought it online, then what would be the difference from them and buying from ebay. The only diffenrece I can see is one says Rising sun and the other says ebay, so unless you go and actually see the motor, you don't know what you trully get until it arrives.

we sell 7m-ge and 7m-gte engines on www.driftmotion.com, and we compression and leak-down test them before shipping. Shipping is usually more then $130 but the total price would still be less then the prices from the other guy. Cressida engines are the only 7m-ge's coming out of Japan these days. We are very up-front about this though. You just need to change the motor mount brackets, injectors and sometimes the fuel filter and it's lines. All the parts can come off of your old engine.

What I would do is instead of buying a used motor from an importer, I would jsut get a newly rebuilt long block from places such as Jarco. $1500 for basically a brand new motor. Warranty plus it's a new rebuilt vs the 40k-60k miles (BS!) engines from japan.

Rabidchimps.com goes thru the motor and checks the bearing. The also do a MHG and ARP studs, new seals, and new oil pump. I also asked them if they would do ARP studs and they said they would for only the cost of the studs and $25 labor. The regular 7M is 2,000 + shipping and with the ARP mains it was like $2150 plus shipping. Not a bad deal, and they seem to be a reputable business.

I have a customer's "rebuilt" engine in my garage from k-wat, blew a hg in about 6k miles. We have rebuilt lots of "rebuilt" engines. I have a bhg collection of old hg's. Usually they just pull the pan and look inside and sell it as reconditioned. Most places can not surface the head and deck as smooth as needed because they don't have the right equipment. Sure they will put in a headgasket and arp's for $25, because they just pull the old bolts out, slide a stock hg in and torque the arp's and ship it out. Maybe there are exceptions to this, and I am not saying this because I think we are the only guys who do it right, it's more that I don't want anyone to get mislead and take the path to frustration and dispair like many 7m owners do. Just make sure to get a shop or mechanic that knows the 7m, because it has so many idiosyncrasies you can't build it right unless you have experience with it.

Aaron, are you saying that you will "rebuild" the used engine with a complete mirror edge on the head and lap the block? What do you charge to do the MHG, oil pump, new seals, and ARP studs.

Yes, we can rebuild a jdm 7mgte and our machine shop will put a <15 ra surface on the head and deck. Usually the ra comes out to about 8 on their new mill. It is a uber-expensive machine ($100,000+). I would not recommend lapping a block by hand. You have to disassemble the block to have it surfaced then put it back together. I can sell a 7m head, low ra surfaced, complete valve job with new seals, valves adjusted, ready to install for $650. And the valve seats are actually radiused to match the valves, rather then the standard 3 angle valve job. I have to go but I will post some more prices later. We can do porting and polishing too.
