I am in the process of buying a 7m-gte for my MK3 and noticed there was a difference within years.
apparantly there was one with 230hp @ 5600rpm in the years 1986.5- 1988, and another at 232hp @ 5600rpm the years 1989-1992.

My car is '88 and i can only get my hands on a 1989 GTE. Is there really a difference aside from the extra 2hp?

note:
read this info on the supra wiki.

Thicker casting on the Post89 and Late88 (November 88 and on) blocks. If the motor youre getting is from a very Late89 it could have the 7M crankshaft in it. Other than that the 7M's are identical

you also get an extra bump from 246 lb/ft torque to 254

all in all you probably wont notice much in car difference between the years due to the 89+ running a 3.73 rear vs the 87-88 running a 3.91

but if you are dropping an 89 GTE in an 88 you would probably notice a slight gain.

A lot of the sensor connectors to the main harness are different. Your '88 may not have a BVSV on the thermostat housing.

Exhaust manifolds are different...reinforcement ridges were added on top of the runners on '89+ motors.

There are several head casting differences as the years progressed, with the later versions flowing better stock.
