I took my head in to get milled and they said it might need a valve job. so they tel me 550 for the valve job because they have to adjust the shims and what not and its a bitch. I looked in my tsrm abd didn't see anythng about adjusting shims so I'm wondering if they are just trying to hamer me or what's the scoop. I don't know too much about engines.

yes when you do a valve job you have to adjust valve shims.
yes adjusting shims are a bitch, you have to go one by one and takes alot of time, heres how to do it:

as for the prices thats a rip imo, my machine shop did mine for 300 including all new seals, 3 angle valve job, pressure test, resurface,etc.etc.

Or you can just get it shipped to your door for $450 fully rebuilt from a shop in Texas that posts on eBay. Put your back in the box ans UPS picks it up.

YOu can get an already rebuilt head with a 3 angle valve job for $450. Once you get the head, you can ship your old one back in the same box, and don't have to pay shipping either.

These guys are pretty awesome:
My bro gets the Cylinder heads from him all the time:

That doesnt sound too bad. Toyota of Carlsbad California wanted 575.00 just to adjust the valves. So I'll stick with the tick. I also asked them what it would cost to have them rebuild my 89 N/A motor the kook told me $7900.00 LOL geez those folks that own that dealership must have been able to retire YEARS ago with prices like that. One sad thing I've notice as soon as you mention Supra shops think your rich.

What all are they accualy quoting you on doing, If they they're checking your head for cracks, testing all your valve springs, replacing or machining the valve seats, grinding your valves, put it all together, and vacume testing it theirs a few hours of labour involved, everyone is right you can get it for cheap but the shop isnt tryin to rip you off thats just how much its goin to cost for them to do the work at their rate. Its not worth it to them to charge you less when they could easily be working on something else and making the same amount of money in the time that their using to rebuild you head. Its obviosly cheaper to get a head from somewhere else but dont think their intentionaly ripping you off like everyone is saying.

well the cams are still there and stuff. they said to remove all the stuff and surface it and do a valve job would be about 650. 550 for the valve job and 100 for the surfacing. i dont really want to pay 650. seems like too much for cleaning crud off of a few valves

Not being a cock or anything but how much do you think it's worth to clean 24 valves?

All of this adds up in man hours and they're a business not a charity.

If the prices aren't to your liking take it elsewhere, you're in charge!

I know the labour charges for my new head were up there but the job provided was well worth the extra!

If you ended up with 24 different size shims I'd question their work!

i agree with IJ. redoing a head is a massive pain the ass. i have redone my own chevy v8"s. i hope to never do it again.

as far as a 7m gots, i had a shop my shop sub-contracts redo my head. deck, magnaflus, valve guides, 1mm oversize intake valves, flow test, the whole freakin 9 yards AND the kitchen sink. cost me $250. what sucked about it is i had to hitch a ride to work for a week straight. but i got a deal cuz of the shop i work at. i also know the machinst from a brother of mine(the two of them hang out a lot!).

550 is a lot to pay, but the labor it takes to make sure that head holds out is well worth the money if you ask me. look around a little more, i bet you can find a slightly cheaper price. but reshiming that head adn doing the all the above is still a pita!!!

yeah i think im going to take it to torquefreaks. (they are local here in portland, lucky me!). i trust them more and they can do it all for about $100 cheaper.
i dont think i would be able to do the job myself.. i dont know shit about inside of engines, but im hoping my project will go smoothly and not turn into a disaster! i still have to get the engine back together and get seats and finish the auto to tranny swap.
