Has anyone here experienced 4:10 gears.. If so how is the highway cruising ? gas mileage ? daily drivability ? If not what do you recommend ?

i like it but also run a 275/40-17 out back.with the stock size wheels/tire's it would probably be a little much.

It's the perfect gear for a full weight MKIII ~550whp with raised rev limit on a 26" tire in the 1/4. I'd run it anywhere between 5-600whp. The car will trap anywhere from ~6400-6800 depending on exact weight and horsepower in 4th. If you do a lot of highway, yeah, it isn't quite as pleasant of a ride as the 3.91 or 3.73, but the difference isn't really that great, didn't bother me at all. 4.30 was a little excessive on the highway, but I still didn't really mind as I never really go over 70 on the street. I'd run the 4.30 anywhere from 4-500whp, assuming same weight and tire size as above for ideal 1/4 mile performance. If you aren't a 1/4 mile guy and drive the car a fair amount than you might want to stick with a 3.91. Most guys wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 3.91 and a 4.10 if you put them in a car on the street and didn't tell them.

I know you are the toyota parts guru, but I personally pulled my 3.91 from an 89 car in a yard.

i also have pulled a 3:9x from a early 89 auto.

Yes, I've heard things like this before, but not once has anyone ever actually ever posted up any sort of proof, showing an 89 with a 3.91 differential. Every 89 I've seen (including 1st-2nd month production vehicles), has had a 3.73, and all of my documentation shows all 1989's came with 3.73:1 rear ends.

So until anyone posts a picture of a data tag from an 89 with a 3.91 axle code on it. I'm sticking to my guns, haha.

I made an offer of $20 USD about 2 years ago to anyone who could post a picture of an AE86 GT-S with an A/T, nobody ever has. I think this is the first time I've said it for this, but I'll PayPal $20 to anyone who has a picture of an 89 data tag with a 3.91 diff code. ;)

EDIT: It should be mentioned (but I believe it is understood), that this applies to any North-American vehicle.

You are right, 3.91s have a drive gear with 10 teeth and 3.73s have 11, so you can not just swap the driven gear to correct the speedo. I got my 4.10 from a Torsen and swapped in a US LSD.

I'd love to take your money, but the car was crushed over 5 years ago.

Opinions on 4.10?

Well, highway milage isn't that bad in my car, around 9.5-10l/100km, whatever that works out to in MPG. Cruises a little high for my liking (about 4000 cruising at 140km/h), but gets into boost fast that way.

I break my 285s loose at 100km/h.

I'm considering droping down to a 3.73 or 3.54 just to see how much of a difference it would make.

Look either on the firewall or the door jam for the data tag. The axle code will be either G305 or G315. I'm betting 3.73 with that build date.

i'll check right now
