I'll post the question first, and tell the story last.

1987 300ZX NA VG30E motor (I believe). Mechanic tells me that he did a compression test on it, and gave me numbers (from memory, probably not exact) 180, 20,130 on one side, and 180, 30, 120. Should this car run smoothly at 70-80 mph for 30 interstate miles, then 5 more miles at 40-50 with 3-4 red light stops?

This car ran great, until it lost a radiator hose, and was driven until the car stopped. It's my son's car, and him and a friend took the car to Atlanta (350 miles) with no problems. After the show they went to see was over, they were to stay at the friends aunt's house, so the friend was driving, and my son fell asleep. The car got to a point that he couldn't get it over 50mph, but he kept driving like that until it stopped. I doubt my son would have known any better had he been awake, so I can't blame anything on the other kid.

I told the story to the well respected shop owned by 5 guys who own Z cars. The car wouldn't idle without a slight amount of fuel, and it has a miss, but not really a huge one. At 70, or even 35, you can't feel the miss at all. I told them that I thought the miss could be caused by water in the distributor, but wouldn't at all be surprised if it was BHG'd. It blew the 4 inch hose just under the filler cap, and coolant could have easily been slung into the distributor, which is very close by. I'm just thinking it ran too good on the way there for the numbers he gave me.

entirely possible. those vg motors are very stout even when damaged. they are known for cracking heads when overheated. id guess you have a couple bad heads from the #s you posted. if you need i have 3 vg30's in my storage. one vg30et as well. the et has about 30000 miles on it and is complete turbo and all. the others include a 6000 mile since rebuilt nissan reman(probably my best used motor) all are for sale as i have abandoned that project. pm me for further details

If he drove it until it died then the numbers are probably accurate. You could always do your own compression test. Z31s are a PITA to work on but compression test is still pretty simple.
