So ever since I got my car the second gear has been acting up, it grinds when going in. I'm planning on changing the clutch soon, so I figure might as well take care of this as well. does anyone know if there is a quick solution to this or is the only resolution to buy a new tranny. I read something about "climbing gear oil?" on one of the ma70.com pages. does anyone know what this is?

Ok, do you understand how a transmission works? If 2nd gear is grinding and only second, then chances are it is not your clutch not disengaging. It's probably your synchros, and changing to certain gear lubes may help. However it will not solve the problem, you need new synchros. Other option is to learn to shift with rev matching, it can even be done with out ever touching the clutch pedal. Thats what I say to "heel toe downshifts", fuck them. Why not just have one foot on the gas and the other on the brake while matching the revs to make the downshift without the clutch?

A different gear oil probably will not do much. I'm in a similar boat and have been through 2 gear oils now. The best was Redline 75W90NS so far so I'm going to stick with it. It doesn't eliminate grinds, especially on downshifts, but it does help the syncro enguage with what little it has left.

Oh, and rev matching w/o the clutch is an awesome way to nuke an R154 nice and fast.

You could try some GM syncro mesh and use that as a band-aid till you can get it fixed

okay will try that and see if it works. the main thing is that if the speed is below 20mph, no problems smooth shifting. 20-25mph, a little hesitation. 25+ mph and it grinds.
