So I went ahead and forked out the 25 bucks for ANOTHER compression tester (my good one is in NM) and tested the comp. on my new 89. All cylinders over 220lbs highest being 230lbs. Looked in the book and it says standard compression is 156! sooooooooo...what am I missing here?

Did someone (good news) put in high compression pistons, or a MHG and shave the head? OR (bad news) are the chambers full of carbon build up and deposits?...Anyone have any idea what kind of compression ratio would be needed to get pressure readings like that?

The engine runs great now that I unplugged the cat, doesnt blow any smoke, and maintains good temp. Im not able to check for knock because the clutch is shot and when I stomp it hard it just spins...

any insight would be great!

From the dealer? I might wanna try that. Is it as like catastrophic as seafoam or what?

Its a little bottle that you put in your gas tank. Full tank I presume so your SOL Hells lol.

Anyways, guy said it was strong stuff and that itd eat the paint off your car if you werent careful, and that youd have to run the tank to empty within 2 days.

Seafoam often will work as an overnight piston soak if the deposits aren't too bad but there are better products out there. It's a popular fuel cleaner in the motorcycle community but it's still nothing more than a light oil and naptha. I wouldn't use it other than a soak and I'd never put it in a crankcase or suck it into the manifold as is popular. Lots of CC deposits? Time for some water injection....

Seafoam practically is toluene...

I agree water injection is very effective...

I mainly do the trick of using the booster line and straight into the manifold. But first i make sure each cylinder gets some...

Bg product is what i use and it works nicely...

Practically toluene? What does that mean? Seafoam has zero toluene in it. If you're looking for toluene try Berryman's B12.

The fact is for serious deposits putting stuff in your fuel or sucking it into the manifold doesn't work all that well. A true soak is better. So will running lean for a bit. It won't clean valve deposits but does a decent job on the combustion chamber. Better still is water injection, it'll clean everything right back to the tailpipe.

If you have to put something in the fuel use a polyamine based cleaner. Gumout Regane, Redline SI-1, or Techron Concentrate. Solvent based cleaners are oil of snake. BG-44K used to be good stuff until they yanked the polyamines out of it a few years ago. It's never been the same since. Still, it beats Seafoam hands down. I don't like Seafoam because it's a bit of naptha in an oil carrier. While naptha is a solvent who wants to burn oil? Why do you think Seafoam smokes so much? Not to mention it isn't healthy for a cat.

Seafoam is one of those products that has a lot of hype attached but once you look at what's in it you won't be impressed. It won't do squat on heavy deposits. I have a link to a great study done on CC deposits using all the common stuff available but can't find it at the moment. Seafoam didn't fare well at all. I'm continually amazed at how many get sucked into buying some of these products.

yes someone please elaborate a bit on this water injection method!

The good news on this engine is that the compressions all within close range of each other, so I dont suspect any major wear.

It does smell like its still running rich (at idle at least), and I have no idea how long the cat was plugged...but if I can get some of the carbon build up out of there I will be happy and call it a day.

bah, you posted your reply while I was typing...ignore me.
