2004 Volvo S40 T5 issue?

My friend has a Volvo S40 T5 that shakes really bad at idle, particularly while idling in gear with the foot on the brake.

We checked the timing, and the plugs and all the simple stuff we could think of. So he took it to a shop that deals with Volvos and they gave him a diognosis of what was wrong with it and said that they CAN fix it.

They replaced the cam gears, switched the cams to their proper position (someone swaped them around before), replaced leaky water pump and a couple other things I can't remember.

After all this, the car still isn't right and continues shaking at idle. The mechanic also said that there is a bent valve (caused by the timing/cams being wrong). Could the bent valve be the real cause to the issue? Any other suggestions?

Sorry for the long post, but I'm trying to help out a good friend so any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

If there really is a bent valve then yes that could be it. How did the mechanic determine there was a bent valve other than just assuming it is because the cams being off? Is the check engine light on?

Ok, a compression test was done to the engine yesterday and all cylinders are good at 120 - 130 PSI and they did not leak down. So even if there is a bent valve, it isn't bent enough to lose compression. Maybe the mechanic was lying.

Cam Position Sensor was also changed for a new one.

Any other suggestions?

If it runs fine, I doubt the valves are bent. the timing needs to waaayyy off to bend valves.

I guess that depends on the motor clearances.

Have you checked the motor mounts?

We've ruled out motor mounts, they are in good condition. I will post up more info in the next couple of days when I get time to go look at it. I will check for codes.

did you tried a comp test with oil yet cause you comp ration should be like150 to 180 pending how much carbon build up you have and this is just a ball park

all so is this with the thottle plate fully open or closed

I wasn't there when the compression test was done, but when I go over there this weekend, we will check it with oil and throttle closed.

I didn't think about the trans. mount, so we will check that also.

I'm starting to think it could be a vacuum issue, so we will also go through the vacuum lines.

Ok. 3 out of 5 cylinders have bad compression after it was re-checked. So it's not looking good. We're going to try to get the head pulled off next weekend and see whats going on inside it. It probably does have bent valves after all.

We have to get the car back from the shop first, since they don't know what they are doing. They didn't even do a compression test on it until friday.

That should have been one of the first things they checked before they gave the diagnosis and stated that they could fix it.
