Hello everyone? I'm new to swapping engines, and to Back wheel drive all together... (used to own a supercharged Tiburon 'oh well') anyhow, my cousins have a garage, and they have 2 extremely good projects:

1st
IS300 with a 2002 2jz and the 6 speed gearbox...

2nd
Silvia S15 with an RB-26 swap...

anyhow, I'm planning to do a project similar to their project, at first my mind was on the RB26 on a 180sx, but then I found that the 2jz is way better and more reliable stock...

After some research I found that the 6spd is kinda expensive on my budget, so im lookin at another route...

I saw a 1jz in my cousins work shop, and they were planning to install is on an Altima SE-R, but then they backed out of that project... So they've actually advized me to buy it and install it on the 180sx...

What I found out is that there are 2 different 5 speeds, a small one that came on cressida's or Chasers, and some newer generations (not sure of any of this, im asking) and I don't know which is better... one of them has its shifter directly on the gearbox, the other has the shifter somewhere behind the gearbox...

Im planning on a highway car... all racing type car... balanced out, nothing extreme to one side... but I mainly race "Drag"...

Any Info would be great... Any is helpfull...

there are two different trannys. the R154 and the W58. chances are thats a R154 on the 1jz, dont know any reason it wouldnt be. stick with the R154, it can handle anything you throw at it

the w58 i would say is the smaller brother to the r154 and should be cheaper...

r154 you need a 1jz 5speed bellhousing to fit onto the 2jz and the w58 you can find from any non turbo 2jz

Okay it turned out to be the r154

Okay, this might be out of the main point but I was in a ghetto area where i found a 300zx and a 200sx (240sx in the US) the 300zx is in a okay to bad condition, and the 200sx is in an excellent condition... one of them is going to be my shell... 200sx are extremely rare to find... more close to impossible...

Which one would you guys advice me to take?
the 300zx is 1333$ for the shell only... includes everything except gearbox and engine...

the 200sx has a carburater nissan very small engine, with a cheap ass gearbox just for it to run around... and he wants 4000$ but its in more than mint condition...

yeah me 2, i prefer the 240sx way more than the 300zx, plus the 200sx is even lighter than the 240sx... so imagine how good would that be...

Just to clarify the forst post, when he was describing the two transmissions, I don't thing he was talking about W58 VS R154, I think what he was describing were the two types of R154s.

The 1JZ was only mated with an R154, but there are two different shifter positions you can get for them. The shifter on the tranny (Supra) or the shifter behind the tranny (Soarer). Other then that, they're the same.

IIRC, most 240 guys use the Soarer tranny because it fits better in the car.
