I'm going to check out a 1JZ swapped mk3 thats partially done. I guess it runs/drives but wont rev past 2k. He says its in safe mode. Wondering if this a common but easy fix or or a pain looking for an electrical issue or faulty sensor.
Also anything else specific I should be looking for on a 1jz swap other than hack wiring jobs and so on?
Thanks

check the crank position sensor. you can unplug it right behind the alternator and ohm it out with your dvom.

check the pins in the connectors that go into the ECU bcuz they get loose from repeated removal/install.

last thing i can think of would be to check the compression if nothing else works

Check the codes to. Hopefully the guy is giving you a great price for a car with problems. compression and leakdown tests might prove some valuable information also. I have a suspicion it is the capacitors in the ECU. These are prone to fail if they have not been replaced. My car acted like that one time and I couldn't get it to run right felt like a limp mode as well. Turbos wouldnt boost, would be hard to start and sputter around if it did start. This was a common problem on DSM's as well. I have heard of a guy that would buy cars from someone that was having run issues. After the pink slip was signed over he would take a working computer swap it in and drive right off into the sunset. Maybe you can find a local with a working computer and do the same.

i had this exact problem with my 1j stock ecu. only thing with mine was that the cap had leaked and shorted out onther component, there was a nice burn on the circuit board.

I had this very same issue with a 2jz swap and it turned out to be that cam position sensors pins had not been rewired with the correct polarity. Simply de-pinning the cam sensor and swapping the pins around fixed the issue entirely. This may or may not be a possible fix depending on the wiring and what was affected during your swap. Something to check anyways.

In this particular case, the gauge cluster connector(M1) was wired incorrectly causing a signal to feed back to the ECU and make the car cut out.
