Hi guys,

I just started a new project and purchased a 1jz supra front clip. I comes with a 2 weeks start up warranty so I'm trying to start it in the clip and make sure everything is ok. It arrived yesterday and last night I began working on it. It has missing the 30a & 40a fusible links and the main relay so I replaced those, hooked up a battery and fuel pump. I tried starting it (by the key) and it cranks but doesn't turn over. I checked and it does not spark and I check the injectors with my noid light and they aren't firing. The ECU casing looks beat up and I'm wondering if it's bad. I can't check the codes because it has no gauge cluster. I checked and didn't see any missing connections, but does anyone have any ideas?

I greatly appreciate it,
KC

If you can get ahold of a spare ignitor plug that in and see what happens. Put a fresh set of NGK 6097 plugs gapped at .022 Open up the ECU and see if you can see any burn marks or leakages.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will check the ECU tonight and I will like for a spare ignitor. I worry though that since the injectors are not firing that it might be more than the ignitor, which I think only controls the spark.

Isn't the gap of .022 a little small? I thought stock gap was around 0.032.

Can you turn the engine over by hand?

Yes I can turn it over by hand. The compression is good and the motor spins freely when cranked by the starter.

I had an inkling that it was ECU related as I checked and there was voltage to the ecu but not outputs. So I popped it open and it appears as if one of the capacitors has failed. I will replace it tonight and see if this fixes the problem.

Thanks,
KC

Several members are running .022 and their Supra's run fine. Each motor is a little different. For the 1J use NGK 6097's gapped between .022 and .028

Yeah .022 will be fine if you're running higher boost and maybe a standalone, but stock ecu should be from .028-.032. I do love the NGK 6097's though. Even if they were gapped to .022 it should still crank, but he has bigger problems than that.

To the OP, good luck.

When I got mine, my fuel pump relay wasn't connected........but that wouldn't keep it from firing. It would just keep you from getting gas.

kind of what i had in mind. if its off it'll turn over, might even start for a split second, but it wont stay on thats for sure.
