Clip or engine/transmission? A clip is generally the best method. There are always exceptions to the rule, i.e. "my brother gave it to me". Driftmotion has them.

How much does it cost? Clips alone vary from $1,600 to over $3,000. The quality varies along with the extras, too. Generally lower priced clips have parts missing, i.e. intercoolers, intakes etc. Higher priced clips contain more OEM parts but if you are going for immediate mods then those won't be much benefit.
3. What models did the JZA70 have? Standard, Type R, and Limited. Within each model there were varying options. The Type R had Bilstein shocks and Recaro seats. The Limited had a digital dash.

What other parts does it require for basic install? The install requires a MKIV Supra power steering hose either Toyota (p/n 44403-14020) or aftermarket like PartsAmerica or custom hose from your local hydraulics shop. Toyota MKIV Supra throttle cable (p/n 78180-1B090) or custom. Power steering union bolt from a MKIV Supra if using the MKIV power steering hose..
5. How long does it take for the swap? I had everything swapped over in 3 weeks. The harness extension took 3 days to complete. It would have been shorter had I not taken the time to convert the Japanese wiring diagrams to English. Other swaps are in their 2nd year.
6. Is there a technical service manual or wiring diagram? Yes but only in Japanese. I have translated the wiring diagram to English and have it available on this site.
7. What is the factory HP? Toyota lists the 1JZ as 280FWHP. Bone stock the 2.5L will produce 240RWHP. An intake and 3 inch exhaust can add up to 30hp. This engine likes to breath.
8. Do you need the factory wiring harness? No but it makes it a lot easier to wire up. If you use the existing harness, it will have to be extended 21-24 inches. There are 2 plugs in the same area as the ECU that will have to be changed out. Some installers are making an intermediate harness and mounting a junction box on the firewall.
9. Will the JDM radiator fit? Yes, it's a direct bolt-in replacement.
10. What type of cooling fan does the 1JZ have? The factory 1JZ (90-93) used a hydraulic coolant pump and fan with an inline cooler. The 2JZ waterpump and fan assembly is a direct replacement.
11. What are clearance areas to watch? First the passenger side firewall behind the rear turbo. Second, the driver side PS rack top bracket and oil pan.
12. What about A/C? If you keep the JDM compressor header then only one A/C line can be used. The second line must be custom made. If you swap the US compressor header then the rear PS pump bracket must be ground for clearance to the connectors or removed. Personally, I would opt for a new A/C line.
13. Can you use an NA (W58) transmission? Yes, but not recommended. The 1JZ used the R154 with the 1JZ bellhousing. You can use a W58 with a 2JZ clutch. The 7M nor the 2JZ bellhousings work.
14. What type of clutch does the 1JZ use? The same clutch and pressure plate as a 7M.
15. What type of fluids does the 1JZ take? Use Red Line MTL in the tranny, and if you get the Torsen diff then use Red Line 75W90NS, otherwise use 75W90 for the LSD.
16. What is the code for a Torsen? Torsen diffs end with a 9 in the 3 digit code, i.e. 299 for a 4.10 Torsen.
17. Where do you hook up the oil pressure gauge? The 1JZ-GTE engine does not have an oil pressure gauge. Instead the JDM car uses 2 types of oil pressure warning devices. The first is a low pressure sending unit for a warning light, a la IS 300. The second is an oil level sending unit for another warning light. The best method is to upgrade the oil cooler union bolt to the 98 Lexus IS 300/MKIV and affix the 7M oil sending unit to the union bolt hole via a brass 90 fitting.
18. What is the maximum boost on the stock turbos? The stock turbos use ceramic turbines which are only good up to ~14 PSI boost. Higher than that and you risk impeller failure quickly. They have been run as high 19 PSI for very short periods.
19. What is the displacement of the 1JZ? 2491cc.

21. Can the 1JZ use a 2JZ timing belt? No, different block height would thow off the timing.
22. What 2JZ parts can the 1JZ use? Head gasket, valve cover gaskets, oil stem seals, water pump pulley, turbo pressure sensor(for MAP), cam gears, O2 sensor, thermostat, water pump, serpentine belt, igniter.
23. What type of injectors are used on the 1JZ? High impedance, side feed 370cc stock. Drop in 440 JDM 2JZ. U.S. spec 550 injectors can be used if a resistor pack is installed.
24. What type of plug wires does the 1JZ use? The 1JZ uses direct coil packs like the MKIV connected via low voltage wire to the battery for 12 volts.
25. What spark plugs? The same plug as the MR2 Turbo (PK20R8 Nippon Denso). NGK BKR6EP-8
26. Is there a replacement for the hydraulic fan? Yes, remove the complete water pump and replace with a 2JZ water pump.
