I hope i did not miss a thread on this subject already, however I have just purchased a 1992 MKIII with the 7M-GE I am going to do a swap this winter. I am not sure on what motor i am going to use the 1jz-gte or the 2jz-gte . I also have very little info on either motor. I was referred to this forum by a good friend and thought i would start my research here . which is better and why? thanks .

1jzgte= 2.5 liters twin turbo 280hp cheaper in price

2jzgte= 3.0 liters twin turbo 280hp (lil more torque than 1j) more aggressive sound

They're both strong i've been hearing left and right on how they hold hp ranging up t0 700whp on stock internals , to me they are one most impressive engines. I'd pick 1jz because of its cost

There is tons of great info. on both of the the JZ's here. There is even a section dedicated to just them. Start searching there, and if the check book is open the 2JZ is the obvious choice of champions.

Aaron over at Driftmotion.com has most of the parts you need to do eather swap. ;)

Either are amazing engines. As stated, figure out your power/boosting goals, budget, plan of attack, mods, etc. and start from there. There is lots of good 1jz stuff out there but you've gotta do your homework on it. 2j stuff is available anywhere and its pretty easy to tell the good stuff from the junk. Read up on here and SF before spending anything, knowledge truly is power in these cars, not the kind where you can toss money at it to make things go away.

You need to consider downtime also.
The 1JZ came in our body style supra in the JZA70 so if you get a clip or complete set it will be cheaper faster and you can achieve up to 800hp.

At least with the clip you could be driving your car in 2 weeks.

If you want more then 700HP and have a lot of time to do wiring, part collecting & $10K to do the swap I would go 2JZGTE.
To go 2JZGTE you would need good swap experiance hi grade mechanicel/electrical skills or plan to go with reputable shop who could handle the swap for you.

Another thing to consider is SMOG some people go the 100% legal route like in california BAR SMOG regulation requires you to get a US model 2JZGTE with all the equipment to get it legal.

Search out all your facts & details but based on your goal I would just grab a clip ~2500 then throw in some mods + single turbo kit setup then roll on your goal around your price range or a little less if you do the work.

Both swaps take a huge amount of time and many people will argue that the 2jz and 1jz take about the same amount of time. My 1j swap took me months to complete properly.

You got a real steal on the car.

i thought the 2j had 320hp

Official specs were 320 for USDM and 280 for JDM but the JDM's are also supposedly quite underrated. Really it doesn't matter much unless you're keeping the motor stock.

The final engine choice really comes down to you. Do your research, price everything out (including shipping), and give yourself at least $500 of padding for all the little things that will add up. Both motors (assuming the 2JZ is JDM) will take about the same amount of money to take from stock to 500HP, so the 1JZ should come out a fair bit cheaper due to the lower price of the motor.

ok so $5,000 is pretty optimistic, i have found 1j and 2j full swaps motor, standard trans, ecu, and wireing harness any where from 2,100 to 3,000 is there A LOT more needed to complete the swap ?? in the MK III ? other than some here and theres. could I find a list or guide of sort to study, price, choose direction i want to go ??? also any good recomindations on suspention upgrades ?? or Brakes. and last but not least. any opinons on a 75 shot on my 120,000 mile 7m-ge instaled professionaly. just for a little fun before the swap. I have herd both it will destroy the motor and that its not that hard on them if used in moderation with the colder spark plugs ?? THANKS.

The info is all here on the forums - you just have to take the time to study it. It's a little overwhelming at first diving in to a car or swap you're not familiar with, but give yourself a couple solid weeks of research and it'll start to make sense.

The 1JZ is underrated too. They're actually closer to 300hp stock. Again, not like it really matters. I would take the higher displacement any day of the week, regardless of how much power I wanted, especially in a heavy car like the MKIII.
