Ok, little back story...

Picked up a 1J swapped '88 MK3 last week (actually traded it for a swapped honda). The guy's "uncle" did the swap. It's definitely not perfect, but the car does run and drive.

Here's the issue's:

- Car breaks up around 4k rpm.. Had a code 13, did some research and I ohm'd the cam sensor's. I ohm'd them out and are within spec.

- Car has a slight miss all around..Pulled the coil cover and a few of the clips where broken and one was soldered to the coil! :aigo: (I went ahead and ordered new coils and new connectors, hopefully this fixes this issue..)

- Car doesn't make a ton of power.. I know it's rated to close to 300hp, so i thought it would have SOME pep.. Well I pulled the air intake for the turbo's off anddd it's covered in oil. So I'm thinking the twin's are done (or one is), I went ahead and ordered a single turbo conversion for it.

- Car keeps boiling the coolant out of the overflow. This is worst issue... I thought blown head gasket, but from what I've read these are pretty tough motor's to hurt a gasket on. I did a block test and it passed (if combustion gasses are present in the coolant the liquid changes from blue to yellow). The gauge never goes past 1/2, but yet after a drive (even just cruising, hitting no boost) it'll push out the overflow and you can feel it boiling in the upper hose. It had a "safety/purge" cap on it, I swapped it out for a normal one and it still did it... One think I'm thinking possibly, is the twin electric fan's are not enough to cool the motor. I was reading they run hot and need a good fan to keep them cool.

ANY help would be great guy's. I love the car would like to fix the issue's.

If your buying used coil packs pull the blue boots off and check for cracks. Usually there will be. Epoxy and heat shrink will fix that. Also gap your plugs to .028. Break up is common on 1/2jz from coil packs and plug gap.

For stock turbos you generally will always see some oil if you pull off the intake. It's like that on just about every stock turbo engine from any make or model.

Which combustion leak test did you use? The one from napa? Or a good 2 chamber one? Was the car hot? Sounds like a bhg to me. Tho not common it does happen. Only other cause for that is usually a radiator cap.
But cheap electric fans will not help. I would start with a clutch fan and go from there.

Thanks for the quick reply!

They are 6 new coil packs and plug boots. I'll check the old one's though and probably keep them for spares! I'll check the gap too on the plug's. No, I mean like I let the car idle (was bleeding the coolant system) with just the t pipe on and it was dripping onto the exhaust manifold cover.. It was a good tester, used it many times on other car's. The car was up to temp too. What psi should the cap be? The old cap was a 13, so I got the a normal one with the same rating. I was reading bout the fan situation. Was thinking the clutch fan (though noisiest) would work fine. Still trying to figure out what exactly I need though.

If there pouring out then the seal is toast.

Clutch and fan use a 2jzge from a sc300. You have to trim the blade a bit but it's fine.

And actually there not noises at all. The 7m and uz series clutch fans are loud. Sc300 and mk4 supra ones are not.

Can also use a 2jzgte clutch and fan blade.

Yea told you they where bad lol it's not a big deal, I knew they where problematic and wanted to upgrade anyways.

Hmm interesting on the fan. What pump do I need though? I'm assuming it's a 1jz pump on the engine now? But then again I thought originally they where a hydro fan, so I'm unsure.

if you have electric fans now the pump you have on there is fine. the soarer 1jz came with fan clutch.

usually people use a 2jz pump when swapping anyways.

Well not so good news... Did a compression test and 5 of the 6 are 145ish. Number 5 is 40 lbs :(

Guess I'll be pulling the head and having it checked.

What a bummer.

Well tore it down today at work, rear turbo had chunks missing from the exhaust blade and compressor wheel didn't look that hot either. Both where covered in oil everywhere and had decent play... Good thing I decided to go single lol

Full story on the engine.. Did a compression test, 1-4 and 6 where all 145/150.. Number 5 was 40-45. SO did a leak down test, couldn't hear anything from the oil cap/dipstick area. I opened the throttle blade and heard air there and a tiny bit from the exhaust. Then smoked that cyinder and man you can see the air.. Pretty sure it's got a bent valve on that cylinder..

SO, head is in the process of getting pulled. Getting valve angle job, new valves with new seals. Seeing a lot of debate on what gasket to get.. Think I'm gonna stick with the 1J one.

Sucks this is what is wrong, but it's gotta be fixed..
