Hey guys, looking into replacing my current catback (RS-R GTII) with something quieter. Love the sound of the GTII in typical day to day driving, but it sucks after about 100 miles of a road trip... Basically, I want something that is reasonably quiet at cruise. Full on 'punch it Chewie' sound really isn't all that much of a concern of mine, but I want to be able to cruise without hating life haha. Idle can't be any louder than what it already is, and it's not *that* bad now, so...

I've narrowed it down to the following considerations:

-Blitz Nur Spec R
-HKS Super Dragger
-Tanabe Touring medallion

Would love to hear opinions from those who have/have had these exhausts, and if you happen to have any sound clips (found a few on youtube, but some were poor quality), it would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would vote for the tanabe. I don't have experience with the touring exhaust specifically, but I had the discontinued hyper medallion exhaust on my 1jz and I loved it. It sounded great and was quiet until you got on it.

the blits is very loud, i had to get rid of it and ended up with the fujitsubo exhaust. it does sound good but very rare so i would go with the tanabe touring exhaust.

+1

My buddy has this on his car and I like it better than my HKS Super Dragger. If I had to buy a new exh I'd get a hyper medallion, but my dragger came on my car.

you should think about adding a resonator. I put a vibrant straight pass in mine and it toned it down quite a bit

+1 I think the resonator makes a big difference. I have the HKS exhaust on my car and I prefer it over the megan that it used to have. People thought my car sounded like a motorcycle with the megan. I had a Greddy Trust exhaust on my first car with a 7m and that one sounded good although I dont think you can buy them new anymore.

I have the Blitz, and it is rather loud.. for road trips, I could see the sound being rather ridiculous. however, as others have said, one just has to add a nice resonator and that level will drop significantly (compound this further by adding a silencer if need be).

Have a resonator (picked up from Tedekus), and intend to weld it into where my test pipe is. Biggest reason that I'm selling the RSR is because a friend of mine is finally getting one of his Mk3's back on the road, and offered to buy my exhaust. Tried to source a silencer for the RSR, but it seems that RSR has no interest in selling Mk3 products anymore, and I can't seem to find one for sale otherwise...

Alright, now if one were to consider that while I may be getting older, I'm certainly not dead yet, and would like to hear my car a bit... let's talk sound preference.

The Blitz sounds like a good compromise between the all out loudness of the RSR and the almost too quiet HKS... My main consideration with the Tanabe is that it's relatively cheap (~$180 cheaper than the Blitz or HKS), and I could always use that extra money toward something else. Unfortunately I can't find any videos of the Tanabe on youtube.

Pros for the Blitz:
-sounds great
-all stainless
-Can be made quieter to taste (resonator, silencer)

Cons for the Blitz:
-can't really think of any so far...

Pros for HKS:
-nearly silent cruising speeds
-still good sound
-keeps neighbors happy

Cons for HKS:
-not *quite* as good sounding as Blitz, in my opinion
-almost too quiet (if the Super Dragger is anything like the HKS Sport exhaust)

Tanabe:
-nobody has any experience with the Touring Medallion, and I can't seem to find any sound clips of it either... I know the Hyper Medallions sound good though. :)

Drove my car to work today. First real time I have got to put on it since changing the motor to a different car and adding the HKS exhaust. The car is a lot quieter now with the HKS. Sounds good still but not as loud. The tone got a little deeper. Opened up you can tell its an exhaust but doesn't scream anymore like it has raw power. Motor is stock internally on stock boost levels just Driftmotion intake Greddy downpipe and HKS exhaust. I think at higher horsepower levels the exhaust will match my wants perfectly.

Removed my RSR at work (selling to a friend) and drove the car to the storage unit to swap out for the Mk2 while I wait on the Blitz I picked up. Think your 1j is loud now? Try running open downpipe. Good Lord that sounded terrible, I didn't think a turbo car could BE that loud, and I wasn't even getting on it...

Anyway, I'll post up my thoughts once I get the car back on the road for a few days. :)

So, picked up a Blitz Nur Spec as mentioned above... So far, I love this thing. Came with two things my RSR didn't have: a built in resonator and a silencer. Sooooooo much more tolerable now, I can drive through neighborhoods without feeling guilty about doing it at 3am. I think I may still throw in that second resonator where my test pipe was, it's not that it's LOUD at all anymore (maybe I'm just going deaf?), but I'm gonna have to make a long highway trip test before SILV to decide whether I could put up with it for 8 hours. :)

Oh, forgot to mention the actual SOUND that it makes. Well, compared to the RSR's motorcycle sound (on a 1j anyway), it sounds like a real sports car instead. I approve.

Imo, the Rsr sounds and looks terrible.. I really enjoy my nurspec, btw i have a 1j as well. the nurspec isnt that loud outside the car, but inside it can be a little annoying at times (you mentioned long trips.. i couldnt agree more)

You have your silencer in or not? I have yet to have it on the highway, so I'm not sure if it'll be needing a second resonator or not yet...
