1 out of 4 nuts off? Can cause death whine?

So; I just went to take off the turbo since it's been making the death whine sound and was wondering if it is possible that it could make the sound if only 3 of the 4 nuts were holding the turbo onto the manifold?

I mean; I don't want to take the damn turbo off and switch it with another one if I just need to buy a nut?

Any advice? I measured the shaft play and it is within spec.

I don't see how you can measure shaft play with the turbo on the car. Sure, you can measure axial runout, but radial runout requires the oil lines to be removed from the turbo and a dial gauge placed into the CHRA through the oil feed galley. What is your axial runout?

I doubt you measured the shaft play unless you took the turbo off and the housings apart.

Any who, I don't think an exhaust leak could cause deathwhine, but it could sound really nasty under boost.

YES.
&
NO.
When I had a nut loose and almost off all the way before, it did cause a WICKED and unbareable loud hiss as I built up more boost...
I wouldn't call it a whine but it just sounded like a Ford Diesel truck spool...It was insanely loud. Buy a nut, if it doesn't help, you probably have cops chasing you...er....death whine. ;)

Kyle;

The death whine is more of a metallic sound, it kinda stays the same pitch too, doesn't really matter what rpm, once your'e spooled. I found out that mine was from cracked waste gate seat, and a little lateral shaft play. All the more, glad to hear you got another Turbo on her! See ya Friday AM.
