1.5JZ or 2JZ?

What would be the pros of going with a 1.5JZ over a full on 2JZ? Considering that this engine would be going into an A70 chasis. I should have no problem getting ahold of a 2JZ block and crank and would need to make the choice between grabbing a 2JZGTE head and slowly building up a full on hardcore 2JZ or buying a 1JZGTE full engine, ecu, and harness and swapping the built bottom end(that will be a long term project) onto the 1JZ motor and electronics.

Save up $8000.00 if you don't have it already and go with a 2jz. There are hundreds of threads on this already. It has been covered numerous times on here and www.supraforums.com , so I doubt you'll get many people posting in this thread. The only people that go 1.5 are the ones that are already 1jz. It's just an easy upgrade for them. If you dont' have either, then just do the 2jz.

yes, but I don't know why you would. I've read that the 2jz flows better, and has larger valves. I don't know if the intake and exhaust valves are bigger, but I know one of the two is. A friend of mine (racerxj220) was doing this, but he went over to Iraq before he could get it done. Good luck.

yes the 2j head flows more ,I went 1jz becuase it was cheap at the time but I've seen some aristo 2jzgte complete swaps for 2900(R154 tranny). Go 2j and the sound from a 2jz is meaner:icon_evil

the 1J head is best for the 1J and the 2J head is best for the 2J.. the 1J head in stock form can be a small upgrade for the 2J, but nothing amazing, a lot of people do it to N/A 2J's or if their 1J head was already built. But the 2J head on a 1J would be a downgrade as the flow velocity would be less than optimal given the flow thread on SF. The 1J head is designed exactly to up velocity for the 1J.

Go 2J from the start if thats what you want.. I chose my 1J > 2J for the purposes I'll be using my car for. I'm one of few who didn't just do it cause its generally cheaper and easier.

Depends on your plans
If your just starting the JZ engines want a simple cheap swap for dailey driving that can be done in less then 1-2 weeks do a JZA70 1JZGTE conversion.
The stock bottom end 1JZGTE can produce up to 800HP and revs freely up to 8000 rpms.

If you blown the bottom end of your 1JZGTE and have a built top end like kick AZZ single cams etc. just get a cheap 2J bottom end then go 1.5JZ only! People dont go 1.5JZ because they simpley want it from the get go!

2JZGTE only go this route if you want to somehow make it street legal then you need the US version only specificaly the head and all the factory smog equipment then you could get it BAR & passed for smog legal.
If you have money to blow and its endless go 2JZGTE or if your building a race/ drage car and want more then 800HP which is the limit of the 1JZGTE then just go streight for 2JZGTE but after spending all the money and time it might be easier to just buy a MKIV to begin with but thats just logical thinking not saying the jellybean is better just might be cheaper and quicker in the long run.

1.5 jz is going to be much more difficult than just dropping in a 2jz.
I would say unless you really know what your doing go 1jz or 2jz. Or have a lot of patients like suprahero.

From my Take >

If you are actually looking to go to a JZ series, I'd say just go straight to a 2JZgte as there prices are reasonable still.

Comparison between the three is like this >

Go 1JZ if you really want this engine.
If not, just go directly with a 2JZgte as this will not cost much more than a 1jZ swap. Provided you do most or all the work yourself.
Yes I've done all three so I am speaking from experience.

The swap only starts running into high costs is when you start buying high perfromance stuff right away to install or start building up a single setup.. This can distort the price quite a bit.

Currently i am on a 1.5 JZ because I had a 2JZGE block that looked alsmost new sitting saround and I had a 1JZ motor ... so I took the the two and mated it up . I love it more than my 1JZ setup for sure.

1JZ head has larger exhaust valves, 2JZ head has larger intake valves. 2JZ has a slightly better designed combust chamber too. You'll be able to run a bit more timing on the 2JZ head.

Unless you already have a good 1JZ turbo setup, don't bother with a 1.5JZ, just go ful 2JZ.
