Still can't figure this out, but I did a vacuum test. the rebuilt rack does not pass the vacuum test with just the teflon ring. I don't want to assemble it and drive it if it isn't safe. i sure could use some help from someone...
yes. it wasn't expensive, most of the time spent was cleaning the outside of the steering tube and valve housing. Really not that hard. Just this o-ring mystery.
i'm rebuilding a rack off a US or possibly Canadian origin '87 turbo w/o PPS. the rack and valve looks identical to my '89 NA, if that helps. Actually the rebuild was pretty easy because the parts are in good shape, and the special tools are easily fabricated from brass and PVC plumbing parts...
Thanks, I believe you are right. I think the car is fine, but the A/F guage is not working with the stock O2 sensor. The O2 sensor output is approx 0.25-0.75V, and it fluctuates rapidly. I gather this is good. I could use a link to info on what the wideband sensor is for and how to use it...
These are tantalizing tips for a beginner, and i'm grateful, especially since it started with a dumb question.
If anyone feels inspired some night, a supra wiki article on theory of O2 sensors commonly used with this engine, narrow and wide, how they signal to the A/F meter and ECU, and how...
I got some help and I think your right. I had a fundamental misunderstanding of how the O2 sensor signaled to the ECU. I also RTFM and will work through the diagnostics like a good soldier. Thanks for the help.
I just want this car running like stock to sell it, so a working ecu and O2 sensor would be ideal.
I will add your suggestion to my list of things to check.
With the O2 sensor removal not affecting performance or MPG or rich odor from the tailpipe, I'm reasoning it is the ECU, unless there...
yes, thats what i have alright. I don't want to put much into this car, but I'll need the wideband for my buildup anyway, so I'll get one. thanks.
Also, i see the standard tests in the manual for the ECU, so I'll work on that before i waste anyone's time. I'll get back on both results next...
My A/F ratio reads off the scale lean at idle or constant speed, but goes to "stoich" when under full boost. The smell tells me it is very rich at idle. I don't know if there is a functioning catalytic converter, but I suspect not.
Here's the strange thing: When i disconnect the O2 sensor...
Thanks for the info, guys. I'm thinking I'll install the better one and plan to buy a whole new one later. Will small cracks be a problem when you rebuild to a higher output? won't this increase the chances of cracks worsening? How's the reliability of upgraded CT-26 units?
I'm on my first rebuild, and learning one system at a time. The engine is all together except the turbo and accessory parts. Now I'm trying to learn all about turbochargers. I read a basic 20 year old textbook and some good internet columns, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the terminology, and...
So sorry, that went over my head. Why do you need heli-coil rather than re-tapping the hole? Are all the aftermarket sender units designed for a smaller diameter, or is there a technical problem with tapping threads into the block?
IJ - why not just redrill/retap the hole with a pipe thread that matches whatever aftermarket part you are installing? Is there a danger in this, or just more of a hassle than buying an adapter? Thanks.
I personally use a lot of leverage. A good 19mm impact socket, a 1/2" breaker bar that is about 2ft long, and an old strut tube left over after upgrading shocks on a vintage celica. I put the strut tube over the end of the breaker bar for better leverage. I would rather have enough leverage...
Thanks for all your thoughts. Sorry I neglected my own post for a few days: I've got 6 kids. I want to clarify several things:
1) I know my timing had to be wrong. It was a very crude measure. I should have been more clear on that. I was just posing a hypothetical question to get all this...
I just timed my "junk" car that I bought for parts, and it reached 60mph from a standstill in about 4 seconds. I thought it was fast, but that time surprised me since I'm not an experienced driver, I had a turbo lagged slow start, and the boost controller that came with the car wasn't...
I have some follow up, in case anyone stumbles on this thread later. I swapped the IR #2 from a 1989 NA supra. It looked the same, worked great. Somehow it also seemed to resolve intermittently dead reading lights, or perhaps it was just wiggling wires that did that.
Now for the cause: THis...
