Many have attempted it. Few, if any have ever produced a dyno graph proving anything. Honestly, don't waste your time. I've been eying the Canon EOS 50D. The camera with a regular lens costs around $1500, though. :( I suppose that's a bit higher than your spending goal. Lots of camera shops will let you dicker the price a bit, though, if they understand that you'll return your business to them.
